Electroencephalography (EEG) is one of two brain imaging modalities central to the HBCD Study. EEG records electrical signals from the scalp that reflect electrical brain activity.

Instant Cascara (IC) is a sustainable beverage made from dried coffee cherry pulp, a by-product of coffee processing. It is rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds and has a high concentration of antioxidants. This study explored the impact of regular IC consumption on colonic motor function and innervation.

Health-Promoting Potential of Mandarin Pomace Extracts Enriched with Phenolic Compounds.

The aim of this work was to assess the effect of in vitro human digestion on the chemical composition (carbohydrates and phenolic compounds) and bioactivity of hydro-alcoholic-acid pomace extracts from two mandarin varieties (Clemenule and Ortanique) by measuring their antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-glycative, hypolipidemic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The phenolic compound profile showed that nobiletin was the main flavonoid found in the extracts and digests of Clemenule pomace and extract, while isosinensetin/sinensetin/tangeretin were the ones in the Ortanique samples. The digests of Clemenule and Ortanique extracts showed Folin reaction values of 9.

In vitro human colonic fermentation of coffee arabinogalactan and melanoidin-rich fractions.

Coffee beverage is a source of dietary fiber composed by arabinogalactans, which can also be associated to proteins and phenolic compounds, originating melanoidins. Human colonic in vitro fermentations of coffee fractions, one rich in melanoidins (Mel) and the other in its parental polysaccharide arabinogalactans (AG), were performed in order to evaluate the metabolites produced by microbiota, namely short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), phenolic compounds, and bile acids. After 48 h of fermentation, a higher fermentability of the carbohydrate fraction of AG (62 %) than that of Mel (27 %) was observed, resulting in a SCFA content of 63 mM and 22 mM, respectively.

Pedagogical Approaches to Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in Communication Sciences and Disorders Programs: A Nationwide Survey.

Purpose: This study investigates how instructors in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) programs teach about cultural and linguistic diversity (CLD) in general-content courses as well as those dedicated to CLD content with the goal of identifying ways of improving training of preservice clinicians to provide culturally responsive service delivery.

Method: A survey was sent to 4,192 instructors in CSD programs at 295 institutions in the United States and Puerto Rico, of which 565 responded. The survey contained choice response questions and open-ended questions.

Objective: To assess if dynamic hyperinflation is an independent risk factor for mortality and severe exacerbations in COPD patients.

Methods: A cohort of 141 patients with stable COPD and moderate to very severe airflow limitation, treated according to conventional guidelines, was followed for a median of 9 years. Clinical characteristics were recorded and arterial blood gases, pulmonary function tests, 6-min walk and incremental exercise test with measurement of respiratory pattern and operative lung volumes were performed.

Vibrational assignments of cyclic dimers and inter-monomers of adenine relating FT-IR, FT-Raman and UV spectra with SQMFF and DFT calculations.

In this work, three different cyclic dimers and a tetramer of adenine taken from the experimental structure determined by X-ray diffraction have been studied by combination of experimental FT-IR, FT-Raman and UV-Visible spectra with hybrid B3LYP/6-311++G** and scaled quantum mechanical force field (SQMFF) calculations in order to perform the complete assignments of bands observed in the vibrational spectra. The characteristics of different N-H···N interactions of those three cyclic structures together with the group of IR bands observed between 2865 and 2599 cm have been elucidated considering the tetrameric structure. The cyclic dimers and the tetramer of adenine confirm that the bands observed between 2865 and 2599 cm are not due to N-H···N interactions but to bands of combination, as was previously suggested.

Several diseases have been reported to increase the risk of developing HZ and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). The objective of this study is to analyze the prevalence and risk factors for HZ and PHN in the most frequent chronic respiratory diseases, which are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, lung cancer and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
