There is an interaction between dendrocytes and mast cells in the skin. However, in elastosis-related diseases such as actinic cheilitis (AC) and lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC), this interaction remains unknown. We investigated the presence of intact and degranulated mast cells in AC and LLSCC.

Design: Immunohistochemistry was employed to assess the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α), notch homologous protein of the neurogenic locus 1 (NOTCH-1), disintegrin and metalloproteinase-12 (ADAM-12), and heparin-binding epidermal growth factor (HB-EGF) in 17 samples of glandular odontogenic cysts, 10 samples of calcifying odontogenic cysts, and 10 samples of dental follicles.
Results: The glandular odontogenic cyst samples exhibited increased expression of HIF-1α, NOTCH-1, ADAM-12 and HBEGF proteins compared with calcifying odontogenic cyst and dental follicle samples.
Background: Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OP-SCC) represents a public health problem and human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the risk factors. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NET) are meshes of DNA strands and granule proteins. NET has been identified in diverse cancers, whether associated with viruses or not.

Objective: To characterize the oral microbiome of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) before and during radiotherapy (RT), compared to healthy individuals. Evaluating the impact of oral microbiome in the clinical outcomes one year following the end of RT.
Methods: Oral samples were collected from HNSCC patients who underwent RT using the following regimens: no dose received (T0), dose 12-16 Gy (T1), dose 30-36 Gy (T2) and dose ≥ 60 Gy (T3).
The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of the EZH2 protein and describe the clinical and microscopic characteristics of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and pleomorphic adenoma (PA). The study included 16 ACC cases and 12 PA. All ACC and PA cases were positive for EZH2 and the ACC samples showed significantly higher EZH2 expression.

Searches on PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and a two-step study selection were performed to compile data from case reports/series of SNP published in English literature. Our six patients (range 29-63 years) had SNP in the posterior lateral border of the tongue.

Oral mucositis is a common acute complication of a head and neck squamous cell carcinoma treatment. Multiple scales can be used to diagnose and grade this lesion, but they all have some limitation regarding this group of patients. Most of these issues are associated with the hardness to differentiate signs and symptoms from oral mucositis vs.

This study investigated the immunoexpression of autophagy-related proteins (autophagy-related 7 [Atg7], microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3A [LC3A], microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3B [LC3B], protein p62 [p62], and phosphorylated mammalian target of rapamycin [p-mTOR]) in pleomorphic adenoma (PA), polymorphous adenocarcinoma (PAC), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of salivary glands.
Methods: Twenty PAs, 20 PACs, 20 MECs, and 14 ACCs were selected.
Objectives: The aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in the treatment of oral mucositis.
Background: Oral Mucositis is a frequent complication of oral cavity and oropharynx cancer. Considering the OM aggravation by microorganisms contamination, disinfection provide by antimicrobial photodynamic therapy could be an effective approach.
Scientific evidence about genetic and molecular changes in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) among smokers and non-smokers is inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the effects of tobacco on the DNA of individuals with OSCC based on protein mutations. Electronic searches were conducted on PubMed, Ovid, Web of Science, and Scopus to identify observational studies published up to January/2022.

Tobacco smoking involves a high risk of human malignancies, including oral cancer, because it contains multiple carcinogens that cause genetic instability. Thus, a worse prognosis would be expected for cancer patients who are smokers. The aim of this study was to assess the DNA damage response through the expression of checkpoint kinase 2 (CHK2), H2A histone family member X (H2AX), and P53 among smokers and non-smokers with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).

Objective: To conduct a collaborative cross-sectional study on the clinical, demographic, microscopic and immunohistochemical characteristics of GOCs, emphasizing the histopathological characteristics and expression of proteins related to invasiveness.
Methods: Twenty-two cases of GOC from three oral and maxillofacial pathology services in Brazil were selected from 1988 to 2018.
Objective: To describe the frequency, clinical, and demographic features of minor salivary gland tumors and possible associated factors.
Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Clinical and demographic data were collected from biopsy records of two oral pathology services.
Head and neck radiotherapy causes quantitative and qualitative changes in saliva. The objective of this case-control study was to evaluate the salivary biomarkers associated with bone remodeling and tissue repair in patients submitted to radiotherapy for head and neck cancer treatment, compared with non-irradiated individuals. Total unstimulated saliva was collected for ELISA assay analysis of receptor activator for nuclear factor κ B (RANK) and its ligand (RANK-L), osteoprotegerin, matrix metalloproteinase-9/ tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2, vascular endothelial growth factor, and epidermal growth factor.

A multicenter study was carried out in four Brazilian referral centers in oral diagnosis. Histopathological records were reviewed, and all cases diagnosed microscopically as periapical granuloma, radicular cyst, and periapical abscess were included.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted of cases diagnosed as benign CSTNs, with data collected from biopsy records.
Tumor budding (TB) is a promising prognostic marker in many cancers including oral squamous cell carcinoma. The evaluation of TB in preoperative diagnostic biopsies has been proven be possible; therefore, the association of TB with other morphological features can represent an important aid in the previous treatment decision. This study aims to evaluate TB in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) biopsies, assessing its association with other morphological characteristics of the sample.

Objectives: Epithelioid rhabdomyosarcoma (EpiRMS) is a novel morphologically distinct variant of rhabdomyosarcoma, with an unusually challenging microscopic diagnosis. The occurrence of rhabdomyosarcomas in the jaws is extremely rare. This study presents the first case of EpiRMS in the jaw (mandible) and a literature review of the previous 35 cases of EpiRMS.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to analyze the features of lesions obtained from biopsies at the periapical area of teeth with a radiographic or clinical initial diagnosis of apical periodontitis.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on biopsies obtained from 1953-2018 at 3 Brazilian oral and maxillofacial pathology centers. Cases of endodontic and nonendodontic periapical lesions (NPLs) with a clinical diagnosis of endodontic pathoses were retrieved.
We present the frequency of cases of isolated odontogenic keratocysts submitted to microscopic examination at 10 Brazilian referral centres in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. In a retrospective (1953-2017) analysis, data on clinicoradiographic features and treatment of these lesions were collected and analysed descriptively. Among the 258,867 cases retrieved, 2,497 (0.
