Article Synopsis
  • Researchers have created highly microporous carbons from pistachio shells, achieving high surface areas (up to 3300 m²/g) and pore volumes using a CO2 activation process.
  • Different methods were tested to transform the biomass into carbon materials with varying structures and reactivities towards CO2, while optimizing pore development.
  • The most effective technique involved hydrothermal carbonization, which boosts carbon yield and porosity, and higher activation temperatures can speed up the process without losing pore quality.

S-doped carbon sheets have been easily prepared by deconstructing the 3D cellular structure of a fully sustainable and renewable biomass material such as cork through a mild ball-milling process. S-doping of the material (>14 wt % S) has been achieved by using sulfur as an earth-abundant, cost-effective, and environmentally benign S-dopant. Such synthesized materials provide large Na storage capacities in the range of 300-550 mAh g at 0.

Background: Nurses have an important role to play in the management of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). An online survey conducted by the European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association/European Renal Care Association (EDTNA/ERCA) in conjunction with Amgen (Europe) GmbH surveyed nephrology nurses' knowledge of secondary hyperparathyroidism, treatment targets, current treatments, patient adherence and nephrology nurse training education needs. The survey's aim was to establish common practices being used by nurses in the management of secondary hyperparathyroidism and to identify nephrology nurses' training and educational needs in order to improve patient care.

Background: Protein-rich foods are a major source of dietary phosphorus; therefore, helping patients to increase their dietary protein intake, while simultaneously managing their hyperphosphataemia, poses a significant challenge for renal care professionals.

Objectives: To examine the clinical recommendations and practice perceptions of renal care professionals providing nutrition and phosphate control advice to patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Methods: Renal care professionals from four European countries completed an online survey on the clinical management of hyperphosphataemia.
