Background: Patients continue to suffer from preventable harm and uneven quality outcomes. Reliable clinical outcomes depend on the quality of robust administrative systems and reliable support processes. Critically ill patient handoffs from the operating room to the intensive care unit are known high-risk events.

Unlabelled: Education in basic life support is widely proposed to increase survival in out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. The authors aimed to assess knowledge, skills, and attitudes, including willingness to help, regarding myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac arrest among university students of all fields of knowledge.

Methods: An Ethical Research Committee approved this cross-sectional study.

Article Synopsis
  • Access to safe surgery is a human right, but significant disparities exist between high-income and low-to-middle-income countries in terms of surgical care.* -
  • The LASOS-Peds study is a 14-day international research project exploring the rates of complications after pediatric surgeries in Latin America, focusing on both elective and emergency cases.* -
  • Approved by an Institutional Review Board, the findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and shared at international conferences, with the aim of improving pediatric surgical outcomes.*

Severe defects in human IFNγ immunity predispose individuals to both Bacillus Calmette-Guérin disease and tuberculosis, whereas milder defects predispose only to tuberculosis. Here we report two adults with recurrent pulmonary tuberculosis who are homozygous for a private loss-of-function TNF variant. Neither has any other clinical phenotype and both mount normal clinical and biological inflammatory responses.

Rh(III) and Ru(II) complexes, [RhCl(κ-NN'P-L)][SbF] (1) and [RuCl(κ-NN'P-L)] (2), were synthesised using the tetradentate ligand L (L=N,N-bis[(pyridin-2-yl)methyl]-[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]methanamine). In each case only one diastereomer is detected, featuring cis-disposed pyridine groups. The chloride ligand trans to pyridine can be selectively abstracted by AgSbF, with the ruthenium complex (2) reacting more readily at room temperature compared to the rhodium complex (1) which requires elevated temperatures.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates pediatric regional anesthesia techniques, considering the need for opioid-sparing strategies and concerns about general anesthesia effects on child brain development.
  • - Researchers analyzed 2409 studies, identifying 16 anatomical studies focused on specific nerve blocks used in children, such as the femoral nerve block and erector spinae plane block.
  • - While regional anesthesia is frequently applied in pediatric settings, the limited anatomical research raises concerns about the efficacy and safety of these techniques; more studies are needed to enhance their application.

Background: Ascending aorta dilation and aortic valve degeneration are common complications in patients with bicuspid aortic valve. Several retrospective studies have suggested the benefit of statins in reducing these complications. This study aimed to determine whether atorvastatin treatment is effective in reducing the growth of aortic diameters in bicuspid aortic valve and if it slows the progression of valve calcification.

There is growing interest in using cannabinoids across various clinical scenarios, including pain medicine, leading to the disregard of regulatory protocols in some countries. Legislation has been implemented in Brazil, specifically in the state of São Paulo, permitting the distribution of cannabinoid products by health authorities for clinical purposes, free of charge for patients, upon professional prescription. Thus, it is imperative to assess the existing evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of these products in pain management.

Aim: Management of diverticulitis with abscess formation in immunosuppressed patients (IMS) remains unclear. The main objective of the study was to assess short- and long-term outcomes between IMS and immunocompetent patients (IC). The secondary aim was to identify risk factors for emergency surgery.

Introduction: The frequency of revisional bariatric surgery is increasing, but its effectiveness and safety are not yet fully established. The aim of our study was to compare short-term outcomes of primary (pRYGB and pSG) and revisional bariatric surgeries (rRYGB and rSG).

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study assessing all patients submitted to primary and revisional (after a failed AGB) RYGB and SG in 2019.

Introduction: Methylene Blue (MB) has been shown to attenuate oxidative, inflammatory, myocardial, and neurological lesions during ischemia-reperfusion and has great potential during cardiac arrest. This study aimed to determine the effects of MB combined with epinephrine during cardiac arrest on myocardial and cerebral lesions.

Method: Thirty-eight male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups: the sham group (SH, n = 5), and three groups subjected to cardiac arrest (n = 11/group) and treated with EPI 20 µg.

Background: Reported data suggest that 4.2 million deaths will occur within 30 days of surgery worldwide each year, half of which are in low- and middle-income countries. Postoperative complications are a leading cause of long-term morbidity and mortality.

Background: To assess short- and long-term outcomes from non-surgical management of diverticulitis with abscess formation and to develop a nomogram to predict emergency surgery.

Methods: This nationwide retrospective cohort study was performed in 29 Spanish referral centers, including patients with a first episode of a diverticular abscess (modified Hinchey Ib-II) from 2015 to 2019. Emergency surgery, complications, and recurrent episodes were analyzed.

Succinate is enhanced during initial reperfusion in blood from the coronary sinus in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients and in pigs submitted to transient coronary occlusion. Succinate levels might have a prognostic value, as they may correlate with edema volume or myocardial infarct size. However, blood from the coronary sinus is not routinely obtained in the CathLab.

An improved synthesis of the racemic rhodium compound [RhCl(κ ,,',-L1)] (1) containing an achiral tripodal tetradentate ligand is reported. Their derived solvate complexes [Rh(κ ,,',-L1)(Solv)][SbF] (Solv = NCMe, 2; HO, 3) are resolved into their two enantiomers. Complexes 2 and 3 catalyze the Diels-Alder (DA) reaction between methacrolein and cyclopentadiene and the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction between methacrolein and the nitrone -benzylidenphenylamine--oxide.

Whilst CPR training is widely recommended, quality of performance is infrequently explored. We evaluated whether a checklist can be an adequate tool for chest compression quality assessment in schoolchildren, compared with a real-time software. This observational study (March 2019-2020) included 104 schoolchildren with no previous CPR training (11-17 years old, 66 girls, 84 primary schoolchildren, 20 high schoolchildren).
