Worldwide, several million workers are employed in the various chromium (Cr) industries. These workers may suffer from a variety of adverse health effects produced by dusts, mists and fumes containing Cr in the hexavalent oxidation state, Cr(VI). Although comprising only nearly 3% of the tumor mass, these cells were demonstrated to orchestrate tumorigenesis and differentiation, underlie tumors' heterogeneity and mediate therapy resistance and tumor relapse. Here we show that CSCs may be formed by dedifferentiation of terminally differentiated tumor cells under stress conditions.

Cellular senescence is a physiological process that serves as a powerful barrier for tumorigenesis. However, senescent cells can be deleterious for the tissue microenvironment. Such is the case of senescent fibroblasts that release several pro-tumorigenic factors that promote malignant transformation in the nearby epithelial cells.
