Purpose: To assess the impact of a retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) mentoring program in four rural regions with 31 neonatal units in Colombia between 2011 and 2019.
Methods: Indicators recommended by the national program were used for assessment: screening coverage of eligible preterm newborns, proportion screened with any stage of ROP, and proportion of screened infants treated. Data were also collected on the number of units with ROP services and birth weight (BW) and gestational age (GA) of babies treated.
Background: Infections by dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) have some similar symptoms and a cross-reactive immune response, although with different risk populations and outcomes. Here, we evaluated the virologic characteristics and the nonstructural protein 1 (NS1)-specific antibody responses to DENV and ZIKV in children suspected of dengue in different epidemiologic moments in Colombia.
Methods: Viral RNA, circulating NS1 and IgM/IgG specific for DENV and ZIKV were performed by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 301 children suspected of dengue enrolled in a hospital setting during the ZIKV epidemic and a primary healthcare setting during a DENV epidemic.
The isolation of nucleic acids is a critical and limiting step for molecular assays, which prompted the arrival in Colombia of automated purification instruments during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The local application of this technology in the study of tropical diseases, such as dengue and zika, is beginning to be tested. Background: Intensive insulin therapy has been found to reduce mortality in some critically ill patients. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to ascertain the effect of intensive insulin therapy on the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in adult critically ill patients.

Methods: This retrospective analysis comprised 102 eyes that had LASEK for myopia using the Bausch & Lomb Technolas 217 excimer laser.
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of mechanical debridement and suturing of the laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) flap in the treatment of clinically significant epithelial ingrowth after LASIK.
Methods: In a retrospective study, 20 eyes (n = 19 patients) in which clinically significant epithelial ingrowth developed after LASIK were treated with lifting of the flap, scraping of the epithelial ingrowth, and flap suturing. Primary outcome measurements including recurrence of ingrowth, uncorrected visual acuity (VA), manifest refraction, best spectacle-corrected VA, and complications were evaluated at the last postoperative examination.

Methods: Sixteen eyes treated with conductive keratoplasty for hyperopia were retrospectively evaluated to determine the size of the videokeratographic functional optical zone. The functional optical zone of these eyes was compared to the functional optical zone of 16 eyes that underwent LASIK for hyperopia with the VISX S2 excimer laser, for comparable amounts of hyperopia.
Recently, six genes of the gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis gene cluster in Gibberella fujikuroi were cloned and the functions of five of these genes were determined. Here we describe the function of the sixth gene, P450-3, and the cloning and functional analysis of a seventh gene, orf3, located at the left border of the gene cluster. We have thereby defined the complete GA biosynthesis gene cluster in this fungus.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all goniotomies performed at our institution for patients with a diagnosis of refractory glaucoma associated with chronic childhood uveitis from 1994 to 2000 (this was our first-line surgery for such patients during these years).

In addition to genes encoding a GA-specific geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase and a bifunctional ent-copalyl diphosphate/ent-kaurene synthase, the cluster contains four cytochrome P450 monooxygenase genes (P450-1, -2, -3, -4).
