Background: Improving care for patients with severe mental illness in Latin America requires effective strategies that are low-cost. One such strategy is a volunteering scheme, referred to as befriending, which seeks to support the social integration of patients. As a cofactor of delta-5 desaturase (D5D) and delta-6 desaturase (D6D), and gene expression regulator, zinc may play a role modulating membrane flexibility by increasing membrane polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) abundance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a 24-month zinc supplementation (30 mg elemental zinc) on membrane fatty acid composition in patients with T2D.

Sensitive UHPLC-MS/MS method for the determination of tacrolimus in minipig whole blood.

Tacrolimus, a potent immunosuppressant drug widely used systemically to reduce the risk of organ rejection in transplants, has been repositioned for topical treatment of atopic dermatitis. This work describes the optimization of a new method for the determination of tacrolimus in whole blood after topical administration. Sample treatment consisted of an automated procedure based on protein precipitation followed by solid-phase extraction.

Nutritional Effects of Zinc on Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes: Mechanisms and Main Findings in Human Studies.

Zinc (Zn) plays crucial roles in mammalian metabolism. There is increasing interest about the potential beneficial effects of Zn on the prevention or treatment of non-communicable diseases. This review critically analyzes the information related to the role of Zn on the metabolic syndrome (MetS) as well as type 2 diabetes (T2D), and summarizes the biological basis of these potential effects of Zn.

Detecting the presence-absence of bluefin tuna by automated analysis of medium-range sonars on fishing vessels.

This study presents a methodology for the automated analysis of commercial medium-range sonar signals for detecting presence/absence of bluefin tuna (Tunnus thynnus) in the Bay of Biscay. The approach uses image processing techniques to analyze sonar screenshots. For each sonar image we extracted measurable regions and analyzed their characteristics.

Novel genetic loci underlying human intracranial volume identified through genome-wide association.

Intracranial volume reflects the maximally attained brain size during development, and remains stable with loss of tissue in late life. It is highly heritable, but the underlying genes remain largely undetermined. In a genome-wide association study of 32,438 adults, we discovered five previously unknown loci for intracranial volume and confirmed two known signals.

A general factor of brain white matter integrity predicts information processing speed in healthy older people.

Human white matter integrity has been related to information processing speed, but it is unknown whether impaired integrity results from localized processes or is a general property shared across white matter tracts. Based on diffusion MRI scans of 132 healthy individuals with a narrow age range around 72 years, the integrity of eight major white matter tracts was quantified using probabilistic neighborhood tractography. Principal component analyses (PCAs) were conducted on the correlations between the eight tracts, separately for four tract-averaged integrity parameters: fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, and radial and axial diffusivity.

Effects of nanoscale dispersion in the dielectric properties of poly(vinyl alcohol)-bentonite nanocomposites.

We investigate the effects of clay proportion and nanoscale dispersion in the dielectric response of poly(vinyl alcohol)-bentonite nanocomposites. The dielectric study was performed using the thermally stimulated depolarization current technique, covering the temperature range of the secondary and high-temperature relaxation processes. Important changes in the secondary relaxations are observed at low clay contents in comparison with neat poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA).

Differential expression of neurokinin B and hemokinin-1 in human immune cells.

The tachykinins are a group of related peptides that are mainly synthesized in the central and peripheral nervous system, but are also present in peripheral non-neuronal cells. In humans, substance P (SP) is the most extensively studied tachykinin and is present, along with the NK-1 receptor, in several inflammatory and immune cells. The release of SP under the appropriate stimulus may act as a paracrine or autocrine signal that may help to initiate and/or propagate inflammation.

The molecular interactions that influence the plasticizer dependent dissolution of acrylic polymer films.

Poly(methacrylic acid-methyl methacrylate, 1:2) (Eudragit S) is a commonly used pH-responsive polymer that can facilitate delivery to the ileo-colonic region of the gastrointestinal tract. Different plasticizers have been used to reduce the brittleness of Eudragit S films for the coating of solid dosage forms. To better correlate the dissolution rates of Eudragit S films, we have examined their dielectric response to understand the specific polymer-plasticizer interactions.

In vitro deposition of hydroxyapatite on cortical bone collagen stimulated by deformation-induced piezoelectricity.

In the present work, we have studied the effect of the piezoelectricity of elastically deformed cortical bone collagen on surface using a biomimetic approach. The mineralization process induced as a consequence of the piezoelectricity effect was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). SEM micrographs showed that mineralization occurred predominantly over the compressed side of bone collagen, due to the effect of piezoelectricity, when the sample was immersed in the simulated body fluid (SBF) in a cell-free system.
