In rats, NPS and NPSR constitute a novel neuropeptide system expressed both in the central nervous system and in peripheral tissues, controlling visceromotor, neuroendocrine, nociceptive and behavioural responses. Activation of neurokinin (NK)-1 receptors but not of NK-3 stimulates amylase release from isolated pancreatic acini of the rat. In dispersed acinar cells from guinea pig, immunofluorescence staining detected similar densities of NK-1 and NK-3 receptors; conversely, rat acinar cells expressed NK-1 receptors more strongly than NK-3 receptors.
