SARS-CoV-2 emerged from an animal source and was then transmitted to humans, causing the COVID-19 pandemic. Since a wide range of animals are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, the zoonotic potential of SARS-CoV-2 increases with every new animal infected. The molecular gold standard assay for SARS-CoV-2 detection is real-time RT-PCR, where the Ct obtained is proportional to the amount of nucleic acid and can be a semi-quantitative measure of the viral load.

Article Synopsis
  • Management of cerebral hemorrhage in patients on anticoagulants is complex due to a lack of clear guidelines.
  • There can be multiple causes for bleeding, so it's important to conduct thorough diagnostic tests rather than assume the anticoagulation is the sole reason.
  • A specific case is highlighted involving a 73-year-old man with atrial fibrillation and other medical devices who experienced a minor ischemic stroke and recurrent cerebral hemorrhages while on anticoagulant therapy.

Cerebral collateral circulation is a network of blood vessels which stabilizes blood flow and maintains cerebral perfusion whenever the main arteries fail to provide an adequate blood supply, as happens in ischemic stroke. These arterial networks are able to divert blood flow to hypoperfused cerebral areas. The extent of the collateral circulation determines the volume of the salvageable tissue, the so-called "".

Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a chronic progressive vasculitis affecting large and medium-sized vessels, mainly in young subjects. It is most common in women with a higher prevalence in the Asian population. Stroke is a rare complication of TA, and these patients usually have a poor therapeutic response to revascularization treatments (thrombolysis and/or thrombectomy).

Lotmaria passim (Kinetoplastea) is considered the most prevalent as well as the most virulent trypanosomatid associated to the European honey bee Apis mellifera. We used qPCR to screen for the presence of this parasite in 57 samples from ten Argentinian provinces, and were able to detect its presence throughout most of the country with 41% of the samples testing positive. In a retrospective analysis, we detected L.

Equid alphaherpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) infection causes abortion, respiratory disease, perinatal deaths and neurological disorders in horses. The natural infection and available vaccines provide only partial and short-lived protection against reinfections. In the present study, we analyzed the ability of purified baculovirus-expressed glycoprotein D (gD) administered by different routes to induce protective immunity in BALB/c mice after challenge with the EHV-1 AR8 strain.

Previous clinical studies suggest that intravenous (IV) recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) benefits stroke patients regardless of the underlying etiology. In this study, we assessed the possible differences in response to IV rt-PA between cardioembolic stroke and other stroke subtypes. A total of 303 consecutive stroke ischemic patients (from January 2005 to April 2014) admitted to our Stroke Unit and treated with IV rt-PA were retrospectively reviewed.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute ischemic lesions detected on DWI-MRI can predict stroke risk in TIA patients, but the study found limited common factors affecting this risk over 1 to 5 years after the initial incident.
  • * The observational study involved 4,300 patients where 445 were included, with 41.57% showing positive DWI lesions, though these lesions weren't linked to major vascular risk factors like diabetes or hypertension.
  • * The overall stroke risk increased over time, but no significant differences were found in stroke hazard ratios among those with positive DWI lesions across the follow-up periods of 90 days, 1 year, and 5 years.

Equine herpesvirus 1 and 4 (EHV-1 and 4) infect most of the world's horses, causing serious clinical illness. Viral glycoproteins have been identified as the immunodominant antigens that generate the antiviral serological responses to EHV-1 and EHV-4 in infected horses. Here, glycoprotein D of EHV-1 was expressed by a recombinant baculovirus, purified and evaluated by a simple agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID).

Patients affected by diabetes mellitus have oxidative stress with an impaired glutathione (GSH) redox state. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of insulin on oxidative stress, defined as a reduced intracellular GSH/GSH disulfide (GSSG) ratio and lipid peroxidation by plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARSs) in patients with type 2 diabetes. Two experimental interventions were used: (1) measurement of GSH/GSSG ratio after insulin incubation in erythrocytes from 10 type 2 diabetic patients, and (2) measurement of intraerythrocytic GSH/GSSG ratio and plasma TBARS in 14 type 2 diabetic patients during an in vivo hyperinsulinemic condition obtained from a euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp study.
