Maternal unbalanced diets cause adverse metabolic programming and affect the offspring's liver microRNA (miRNA) profile. The liver is a site of β-carotene (BC) metabolism and a target of BC action. We studied the interaction of maternal Western diet (WD) and early-life BC supplementation on the epigenetic remodeling of offspring's liver microRNAs.

Article Synopsis
  • Some studies suggest that relying only on clinical values to assess remission in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can overlook subclinical inflammation, prompting the need for imaging tools like ultrasound (US) to improve therapy decisions.
  • A multicenter study was conducted with RA patients fulfilling specific criteria to compare treatment outcomes based on clinical evaluation versus ultrasound findings, with follow-ups at 12, 18, and 24 months.
  • Results indicated that while both groups experienced disease exacerbations, most complications occurred in the clinical group, highlighting the potential benefit of integrating ultrasound assessments into treatment optimization for RA patients.

Background: The epidemiological situation generated by COVID-19 has highlighted the importance of applying non-pharmacological measures in the management of the epidemic. Mass screening of the asymptomatic general population has been established as a priority strategy by carrying out diagnostic tests to detect possible cases, isolate contacts, cut transmission chains and thus limit the spread of the virus.

Objective: To evaluate the economic impact of mass COVID-19 screenings of an asymptomatic population during the first and second wave of the epidemic in Catalonia, Spain.

Treatment with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), the carboxylic form of vitamin A, lowers body weight in rodents by promoting oxidative metabolism in multiple tissues including white and brown adipose tissues. We aimed to identify novel markers of the metabolic impact of ATRA through targeted blood metabolomics analyses, with a focus on acylcarnitines and amino acids. Blood was obtained from mice treated with a high ATRA dose (50 mg/kg body weight/day, subcutaneous injection) or placebo (controls) during the 4 days preceding collection.

Scope: Resveratrol (RSV) and nicotinamide riboside (NR) are food compounds with anti-obesity actions in adult rodents. Here, the long-term effects of RSV and NR mild supplementation throughout lactation on adiposity-related parameters and the appearance of the beige phenotype in white adipose tissue (WAT) in adulthood are assessed.

Methods And Results: Newborn mice received orally RSV or NR from day 2 to 20 of life.

Aim: To demonstrate the non-inferiority (15% non-inferiority limit) of monotherapy with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) the combination of lamivudine (LAM) plus adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) in the maintenance of virologic response in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and prior failure with LAM.

Methods: This study was a Phase IV prospective, randomized, open, controlled study with 2 parallel groups (TDF and LAM+ADV) of adult patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative CHB, prior failure with LAM, on treatment with LAM+ADV for at least 6 mo, without prior resistance to ADV and with an undetectable viral load at the start of the study, in 14 Spanish hospitals. The follow-up time for each patient was 48 wk after randomization, with quarterly visits in which the viral load, biochemical and serological parameters, adverse effects, adherence to treatment and consumption of hospital resources were analysed.

Purpose Of Review: Recent findings in animals suggest that diet-related factors can programme adipose tissue features in early life and remodel white adipose tissue (WAT) towards a brown adipose tissue (BAT)-like phenotype in adulthood, while impacting on body fat content and susceptibility to obesity. The purpose of this review is to address the significance of these results and their applicability in humans.

Recent Findings: Nutritional conditions in the perinatal period influence sympathetic innervation to WAT and WAT cellularity in rodents.

We show that two important problems that have applications in computational biology are ASP-complete, which implies that, given a solution to a problem, it is NP-complete to decide if another solution exists. We show first that a variation of BETWEENNESS, which is the underlying problem of questions related to radiation hybrid mapping, is ASP-complete. Subsequently, we use that result to show that QUARTET COMPATIBILITY, a fundamental problem in phylogenetics that asks whether a set of quartets can be represented by a parent tree, is also ASP-complete.
