Background: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) with a rapidly growing worldwide incidence. The last decades presented rapid progress in pharmacological treatment leading in many cases to clinical and endoscopic remission, including biological treatment with anti-TNF agents.
Aim: The exact timing of introduction, optimization and maintenance of anti-TNF therapy in IBDs is not thoroughly covered in current guidelines.
Pathologists are often called upon to diagnose colitides that differ from the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). These non-IBD colitides include infectious colitis, microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, eosinophilic colitis, autoimmune enterocolitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticulosis, drug-induced colitis, radiation colitis and diversion colitis. The diagnosis of these different disease entities relies on the histopathological examination of endoscopic biopsies of the gastrointestinal tract.

Aims: To assess the short- and long-term effectiveness and safety of golimumab in daily clinical practice and to identify predictors of response.
Methods: Consecutive patients treated with golimumab in 22 Italian centers were enrolled.
Aim: To assess the impact of short infliximab (IFX) infusion on hospital resource utilization and costs.
Methods: All inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) patients who received IFX 1 h infusion from March 2007 to September 2014 in eight centers from Southern Italy were included in the analysis. Demographic, clinical and infusion related data were collected.
Epidemiological and experimental studies suggest a protective role of estrogens against colorectal cancer. This effect seems to be mediated by their binding to estrogen receptor beta (ER-beta), one of the two estrogen receptors with high affinity for these hormones. Very recently, the demonstration of an involvement of ER-beta in the development of adenomatous polyps of the colon has also been documented, suggesting the use of selective ER-beta agonists in primary colorectal cancer prevention.
