Study Objective: To employ systems biology-based machine learning to identify biologic processes over-represented with genetic variants (gene enrichment) implicated in post-surgical pain.
Design: Informed systems biology based integrative computational analyses.
Setting: Pediatric research and teaching institution.
Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) is a significant detriment to postsurgical recovery and a risk factor for prolonged opioid use. Emerging evidence suggests the estimated heritability for chronic pain is 45% and that genetic factors partially explain individual susceptibility to CPSP. The aim of this study was to systematically review, assess quality, and summarize the studies in humans that have investigated genetic factors associated with CPSP.

Despite the fact that IDA is easily diagnosed and treated, it continues to be a major public health issue. The World Health Organization estimates that 30% of nonpregnant and more than 42% of pregnant women have anemia.

Clinical trials consistently support a conservative over a liberal approach to transfusion. Yet there remains wide variation in practice, and more than half of red cell transfusions may be inappropriate.
