A child's death due to pneumococcal meningitis after contracting the disease in an after-school programme prompted an investigation to assess nasopharyngeal (NP) carriage among her contacts. The serotype of the meningitis case isolate was determined, together with the serotypes of the NP specimens of contacts, comprising the case patient's brother, the case patient's after-school programme contacts and the brother's day-care centre (DCC) contacts. NP swabs from 155 children and 69 adults were obtained.

The article presents results of the research that identified to causes of disease-related absenteeism, justified by medical license, among nursing employees of a public hospital in Montes Claros, MG, Brazil. This is a descriptive-exploratory study. Results indicate that the main reasons for absenteeism are related to musculoskeletal problems and to respiratory diseases; mainly between married female nurse aides, with age between 25 and 45 years, that works in day shift and with more than one employment.

Critical analysis of the Latin American bibliographical production over the last 10 years regarding the adherence/non-adherence to treatment of people with chronic health problems: leprosy, tuberculosis, hypertension, diabetes and AIDS. Thirty six articles were analyzed identifying the variables: year of publication, publication area and kind of study. Most of the articles (27) were produced by professionals of the medical area, in epidemiological studies, and of the nursing area (7) in qualitative and quanti-qualitative studies.

This study concerns descriptive and exploratory, with aimed at apprehending by means of interviews the experiences of children and adolescents with a chronic disease, as it is felt by them. The results show that the lives of children and adolescents are changed by frequent hospitalizations and by the limitations imposed by the disease, which causes alterations particularly in their schooling process. Considering that children and adolescents experience complex feelings and situations in the everyday routine of living with a chronic disease, it is important that health care professionals learn about such needs and incorporate them to care planning, aiming at providing effective intervention in order to promote growth and development.
