Purpose: To evaluate the clinical feasibility of breast density measurements by a new application within a direct photon-counting mammography scanner system.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective study of consecutive women who underwent mammography using a direct photon-counting mammography scanner system (MicroDose mammography SI; Philips Digital Mammography Sweden AB) was performed at the authors' institution between September and December 2013. Quantitative volumetric glandularity measurements were performed automatically for each acquired mammographic image using an application (Breast Density Measurement; Philips Digital Mammography Sweden AB).

Article Synopsis
  • This article investigates how different radiation doses affect the ability of digital mammography to detect microcalcifications, which are small calcium deposits in breast tissue.
  • Images were taken using computed radiography on a breast phantom that had simulated microcalcifications arranged in specific patterns, and multiple radiation levels were tested.
  • The study found that as the radiation dose decreased, the ability of radiologists to detect the microcalcifications and identify missing points significantly declined, suggesting that while some dose reduction is possible, it may impact diagnostic accuracy.
