[Plastic Surgery in times of COVID-19 in a maximum care hospital in Berlin - Description of the situation and approaches to action for resumption of regular operation].

This article illustrates the recent developments in Plastic Surgery, which faces new challenges in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the example of a Plastic Surgery department in a maximum care clinic facility in Berlin, we show recent courses of action, that may be relevant for other hospitals and that can possibly help to handle the recent situation as well as possible further waves of infections and to create a constructive way back into Plastic Surgery routine.A view into the future also shows, that in the context of COVID-19 new tasks will challenge our discipline in clinics as well as in private practice.

Normothermic Ex Vivo Kidney Perfusion for the Preservation of Kidney Grafts prior to Transplantation.

Kidney transplantation has become a well-established treatment option for patients with end-stage renal failure. The persisting organ shortage remains a serious problem. Therefore, the acceptance criteria for organ donors have been extended leading to the usage of marginal kidney grafts.

Achalasia with megaesophagus and tracheal compression in a young patient: A case report.

Introduction: Achalasia is one of the most common causes of dysphagia. Typical symptoms include difficulties in controlling the swallowing process, regurgitation, weight loss, and chest pain. A megaesophagus rarely causes tracheal compression with consecutive acute dyspnea or similar respiratory symptoms.

Development of multiple focal nodular hyperplasia lesions after portocaval shunting. A case report.

It has been postulated that altered hepatic blood flow, particularly reduced portal flow, is responsible for the induction of hyperplasia of liver cells and nodule formation. This report describes the case of a 31-year old female patient developing multiple focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) lesions two years after portocaval shunting and extended right hemihepatectomy due to the suspicion of a malignant liver tumor. Portocaval shunting became necessary due to iatrogenic thrombosis of the entire portal vein after preoperative embolization of the right portal vein.

Hepatocellular carcinoma in Child's A cirrhosis: a retrospective analysis of matched pairs following liver transplantation vs. liver resection according to the intention-to-treat principle.

This is the first matched pair analysis on the puzzling clinical problem of whether to perform liver transplantation (LT) or liver resection (LR) for Child's A hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. A total of 201 patients diagnosed with HCC and Child's A liver cirrhosis were treated with LT transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) or LR between 1998 and 2012. To achieve the most accurate study design, two groups of 57 patients were matched retrospectively according to their tumor characteristics detected by the initial computerized tomography (CT) scan.

Comparative analysis of in situ versus ex situ perfusion on flow and microcirculation in kidney procurement: research on a porcine model.

Background: The first crucial step in transplantation appears to be the effective rinsing of the graft during organ procurement. Even though there is strong suspicion that perfusion results in better rinsing of the graft, there is no proof for this hypothesis. The aim of this study was to analyse the differences of and kidney perfusion in a porcine model.
