Six strains of Gram-stain-negative, obligately anaerobic, non-spore-forming, non-motile rods were isolated from human faeces. Based on phylogenetic characteristics, the six isolates were included in the family , and divided into three groups. The six isolates showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values lower than 96.

Two strictly anaerobic strains (MB11 and MB56) were isolated from common marmoset (Callithrixjacchus) faeces. Cells of the two strains were Gram-stain-negative, pleomorphic short (strain MB11) or long (strain MB56) rods. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that both isolates were related to the genus Phascolarctobacterium.
