Article Synopsis
  • About twice as many boys as girls receive growth hormone therapy for growth hormone deficiency (GHD), but this may be due to a selection bias rather than actual prevalence.
  • A study involving 3,902 children at 17 short stature clinics found no significant difference in the percentage of boys (45.7%) and girls (49.8%) undergoing GH stimulation tests, nor in the diagnosis rates of GHD (22.0% for boys vs. 20.1% for girls).
  • The observed boy-to-girl ratio in both short stature and GHD diagnoses was similar (1.58:1 and 1.59:1 respectively), suggesting that more boys seek treatment due to parental concerns about boys' height

The clinical effectiveness of four neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) (oseltamivir, zanamivir, laninamivir, and peramivir) for children aged 0 months to 18 years with influenza A and B were investigated in the 2014-2015 to 2016-2017 influenza seasons in Japan. A total of 1207 patients (747 with influenza A and 460 with influenza B) were enrolled. The Cox proportional-hazards model using all of the patients showed that the duration of fever after administration of the first dose of the NAI was shorter in older patients (hazard ratio = 1.

Objective: Among antipsychotics, clozapine ranks highest in terms of the risk for weight gain and developing diabetes. However, the mechanism by which clozapine induces weight gain and diabetes remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the mechanism of clozapine-induced weight gain and hyperglycemia, and to clarify whether clozapine-induced hyperglycemia results from impairment of the system regulating appetite.

Risperidone has a relatively low risk of causing obesity and diabetes mellitus and is a first-line treatment for schizophrenia. The aim of the present study was to investigate glucose and lipid metabolism, and feeding-control parameters in schizophrenia patients treated with long-term risperidone monotherapy. Fifteen patients with paranoid-type schizophrenia who had been treated with risperidone and had Global Assessment of Function (GAF) scores >70 were selected and compared with healthy volunteers (n = 25).

Objective: Increased appetite and weight gain are frequently reported in treatment with olanzapine. However, the mechanism behind this appetite gain remains unclear. Ghrelin is a newly discovered appetite-stimulating peptide that has a role in the regulation of feeding behavior.

Leprechaunism represents the most severe form of insulin resistance syndrome, manifesting abnormal glucose metabolism and intrauterine, postnatal growth retardation. Mutations in both alleles of the insulin receptor gene have been identified. Recombinant human IGF-I treatment could prevent postnatal growth retardation and normalize glucose metabolism, however there are few reports of long-term treatment with IGF-I.
