Background: In conjunction with the European cohort study among asphalt workers coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), we studied the mortality of 15,011 French men who were followed for 17 years for a total of 175,062 persons-years. This group contained 2,506 subjects who had ever been employed as asphalt workers: they contributed 30,692 person-years of risk. A reference group was composed of 6,675 subjects (i.

The current study assesses the effects of RA on the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content in irradiated and nonirradiated mouse skin. Mice were exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) for 10 wk, after which they were treated either with 0.

Two groups of mice were included: one was irradiated for 10 weeks; the other was kept as control. After intraperitoneal injection of sodium 35-S-sulfate, punch biopsies were taken for histology and proteoglycans were extracted from the remaining skin with 4 M guanidinium chloride, containing 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate (0.

A decrease in the protein kinase C immunoreactivity and an altered protein phosphorylation have been reported in patients with Alzheimer's disease, but discordant results have been obtained from determinations of protein kinase C activity. By assaying the calcium- and phospholipid-dependent phosphorylation of a lysine-rich histone after detergent extraction, we have determined the total protein kinase C activity in fibroblasts from patients with sporadic Alzheimer's disease, age-matched controls and young subjects. The activity was not significantly different between young and aged controls, whereas it was significantly lower (0.

1. Artery wall proteoglycans-lipoprotein lipase binding characteristics were studied using bovine milk 125I-labelled lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and chondroitin sulphate-dermatan sulphate proteoglycans (PGs) purified from pig aorta. 2.

Both the effectors decreased in a dose-dependent manner the enzyme activity recovered in the culture medium. The decrease in lipoprotein lipase activity appeared to be related to reduced enzyme synthesis without apparent modification of its stability and half-life and was conversely associated with an increase of lysosomal acid hydrolase activities.
