Moraxella catarrhalis, a Gram-negative bacterium, is an important respiratory pathogen causing acute otitis media and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Adhesion of the pathogen to human epithelial cells is mediated via bacterial membrane adhesin proteins.
