Sinusitis is a leading cause of antibiotic prescriptions in the U.S., costing nearly $4 billion yearly, and the study assessed levofloxacin’s effectiveness in treating acute maxillary sinusitis through a technique called serial sinus aspirate sampling (SSAS).
Eighteen patients with confirmed acute maxillary sinusitis participated, and results showed that levofloxacin effectively eradicated all pathogens by the fourth day of treatment, with a median sterilization time of 1 day.
While most signs and symptoms improved significantly after 5 days, the time to resolution varied, ranging from 1.5 to nearly 19 days, demonstrating a swift but variable response in symptom relief.
