Introduction and evaluation of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis supplemental surveillance in the United States.

The current tuberculosis (TB) case reporting system for the United States, the Report of Verified Case of TB (RVCT), has minimal capture of multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB treatment and adverse events. Data were abstracted in five states using the form for 13 MDR TB patients during 2012-2015. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Guidelines for Evaluating Public Health Surveillance Systems were used to evaluate attributes of the form.

Impact and Effectiveness of State-Level Tuberculosis Interventions in California, Florida, New York, and Texas: A Model-Based Analysis.

The incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in the United States has stabilized, and additional interventions are needed to make progress toward TB elimination. However, the impact of such interventions depends on local demography and the heterogeneity of populations at risk. Using state-level individual-based TB transmission models calibrated to California, Florida, New York, and Texas, we modeled 2 TB interventions: 1) increased targeted testing and treatment (TTT) of high-risk populations, including people who are non-US-born, diabetic, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive, homeless, or incarcerated; and 2) enhanced contact investigation (ECI) for contacts of TB patients, including higher completion of preventive therapy.

Completion of primary care referrals among New York state refugees.

An important component of the New York State Refugee Health Program's (NYSRHP) mission is to ensure refugees with identified medial conditions are referred to primary and specialty care. A programmatic evaluation was conducted to assess the completion rate for primary care referral appointments made during the initial domestic health assessment among refugees in NYS (exclusive of New York City). Upon arrival in NYS, refugees may receive a domestic health assessment by one of NYSRHP contracted providers.

Tuberculosis in health care workers during declining tuberculosis incidence in New York State.

Background: Nosocomial tuberculosis (TB) transmission has decreased dramatically in New York State since 1992; however, health care workers (HCWs) still compose >3% of TB cases.

Methods: Aggregate surveillance data on incident TB cases from 1994 to 2002 were examined for trends among HCWs. Additional information was available for HCW cases from 1998 to 2002, including facility type, tuberculin skin test (TST) result at hire, and treatment of latent TB infection (TLTBI).

Tuberculosis screening among foreign-born persons applying for permanent US residence.

Objectives: This study sought to determine adherence of physicians to tuberculosis (TB) screening guidelines among foreign-born persons living in the United States who were applying for permanent residency.

Methods: Medical forms of applicants from 5 geographic areas were reviewed, along with information from a national physician database on attending physicians. Applicant and corresponding physician characteristics were compared among those who were and were not correctly screened.
