Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how variations in postoperative outcomes of total knee arthroplasty were influenced by the physical therapist (PT) responsible for rehabilitation, controlling for other factors.
  • Seventy-nine patients were randomly assigned to five PTs with varying levels of experience, and several postoperative metrics, including range of motion (ROM) and functional mobility tests, were evaluated at multiple time points.
  • Results indicated significant differences in ROM and recovery times in the early postoperative period, but by later stages, there were no notable variations in ROM, suggesting that early outcomes may vary by PT, but long-term ROM remains consistent across therapists.

Background/objective: The continuous improvement of knee function during deep flexion remains a challenge in total knee arthroplasty. Tri-condylar total knee arthroplasty has been designed to achieve this goal. However, the introduction of a third nonanatomic spherical condyle might prevent the joint from reaching full extension due to posterior soft tissue tightening.

We experienced two cases of atypical lateral dislocations of meniscal bearing in UKA (unicompartmental knee arthroplasty) without manifest symptoms. The dislocated bearing, which jumped onto the wall of tibial components, was found on radiographs in periodic medical examination although they could walk. Two thicker size bearing exchanges were promptly performed before metallosis and loosening of components.
