Background: Despite the increased uptake of intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) for treating severely calcified coronary lesions, there is limited patient-level data examining the effect of IVL on quality of life, symptomatology, and outcomes beyond 30 days. We sought to assess demographics, procedural characteristics, outcomes, and impact of IVL on patient-reported angina after a minimum of 6 months follow-up.

Methods: A retrospective single-center study was conducted of patients treated with coronary IVL between January and October 2020.

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has proven efficacy in the treatment of aortic stenosis (AS). Understandably, there is increasing enthusiasm for its use to treat aortic regurgitation (AR). However, there are significant anatomical differences between AS and AR which make TAVI for AR more complex.

Introduction: Incomplete cardiac revascularisation (ICR) assessed by residual SYNTAX score (rSs) is associated with increased 5-year mortality. Furthermore, in the general population, our group has demonstrated that impaired autonomic function determined by heart rate recovery time between 10 and 20 s (HRR) following an active stand is associated with increased all-cause mortality.

Purpose: We hypothesised that ICR would be associated with impaired autonomic function determined by HRR.

Patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with a clinical indication for oral anticoagulation (OAC) in addition to antiplatelet therapy (APT) necessitate rigorous evaluation of bleeding and ischemic risk to guide therapy. The optimal OAC/APT drug combination and duration of treatment is not known. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of patients undergoing PCI with an OAC indication and the rationale for post-PCI combined OAC/APT selection in clinical practice.

The monitoring of physiological function and dysfunction is an important principle in modern medicine. Heart rate is a basic example of this type of observation, particularly assessing the neurocardiac system, which entails the autonomic nervous system and intracardiac processes. The neurocardiac axis is an underappreciated and often overlooked system which, if measured appropriately in the clinical setting, may allow identification of patients at risk of disease progression and even mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • - The Arum palaestinum plant, part of the Araceae family, is commonly found in the Mediterranean, Western Asia, and Europe, and contains irritating needle-shaped oxalate crystals in its leaves and seeds.
  • - A study of 53 pediatric cases of exposure to this plant in Israel revealed that while most cases reported minor symptoms like skin irritation and mouth irritation, the poisoning was generally self-limited and did not require severe medical intervention.
  • - This research is significant as it provides the first clinical data on the impacts of Arum palaestinum poisoning in children, indicating that it is one of the most common plant poisonings in Israel, typically resulting in mild symptoms.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantations (TAVIs) may be complicated by a need for permanent pacemaker implantation post procedure, usually due to local trauma or compression on the conduction system. There are some features that might help predict that a patient is high risk for developing conduction disease following TAVI, for example, underlying right bundle branch block or use of certain types of TAVI. It might also become apparent during the procedure, or before temporary wire removal post procedure.

Leaves display a remarkable range of forms, from flat sheets with simple outlines to cup-shaped traps. Although much progress has been made in understanding the mechanisms of planar leaf development, it is unclear whether similar or distinctive mechanisms underlie shape transformations during development of more complex curved forms. Here, we use 3D imaging and cellular and clonal analysis, combined with computational modelling, to analyse the development of cup-shaped traps of the carnivorous plant Utricularia gibba.

The phytohormone auxin is implied in steering various developmental decisions during plant morphogenesis in a concentration-dependent manner. Auxin maxima have been shown to maintain meristematic activity, for example, of the root apical meristem, and position new sites of outgrowth, such as during lateral root initiation and phyllotaxis. More recently, it has been demonstrated that sites of auxin minima also provide positional information.

A developing plant organ exhibits complex spatiotemporal patterns of growth, cell division, cell size, cell shape, and organ shape. Explaining these patterns presents a challenge because of their dynamics and cross-correlations, which can make it difficult to disentangle causes from effects. To address these problems, we used live imaging to determine the spatiotemporal patterns of leaf growth and division in different genetic and tissue contexts.

Quantifying cell morphology is fundamental to the statistical study of cell populations, and can help unravel mechanisms underlying cell and tissue morphogenesis. Current methods, however, require extensive human intervention, are highly parameter sensitive, or produce metrics that are difficult to interpret biologically. We therefore developed a method, lobe contribution elliptical Fourier analysis (LOCO-EFA), which generates from digitalised two-dimensional cell outlines meaningful descriptors that can be directly matched to morphological features.

D'Arcy Thompson emphasised the importance of surface tension as a potential driving force in establishing cell shape and topology within tissues. Leaf epidermal pavement cells grow into jigsaw-piece shapes, highly deviating from such classical forms. We investigate the topology of developing leaves composed solely of pavement cells.

Nutrient uptake by roots often involves substrate-dependent regulated nutrient transporters. For robust uptake, the system requires a regulatory circuit within cells and a collective, coordinated behaviour across the tissue. A paradigm for such systems is boron uptake, known for its directional transport and homeostasis, as boron is essential for plant growth but toxic at high concentrations.
