Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is characterized by heterogeneous clinical behavior and there is a need for improved biomarkers. The current study evaluated the prognostic significance of serum free light chains (sFLC, kappa, and lambda) and other serum markers (bar, serum thymidine kinase (sTK), soluble CD23, and LDH) together with established biomarkers in 289 patients enrolled into the LRF CLL4 trial. In a multivariable analysis of serum markers alone, higher big and kappa light chains were statistically significant in predicting disease progression and higher blg, and sTK in predicting mortality.

Online formative assessments have become increasingly popular; however, formal evidence supporting their educational benefits is limited. This study investigated the impact of online feedback quizzes on the learning experiences and outcomes of undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory physiology course. Four quiz models were tested, which differed in the amount of credit available, the number of attempts permitted, and whether the quizzes were invigilated or unsupervised, timed or untimed, or open or closed book.

The human cytochrome P450 2J2 (CYP2J2) generates cytoprotective epoxyeicosatrienoic acids from arachidonic acid. Expression of CYP2J2 is decreased in hypoxia, and the resultant decrease in CYP2J2-derived epoxyeicosanoids may contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiac ischaemia. Recent studies have indicated that AP-1 (activator protein-1) regulates CYP2J2 expression in normoxia and hypoxia.

Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism is an entity based on the laboratory findings of a raised serum thyrotrophin (TSH) concentration and a normal free thyroxine (FT(4)) concentration. Patients with subclinical hypothyroidism who also have anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies have a higher conversion to overt hypothyroidism than those without, and treatment with thyroxine is recommended.

Method: We audited anti-TPO assay requests within two NHS Trust hospitals, against consensus standards, to ascertain whether a cascade approach to anti-TPO testing and direct advice leads to more appropriate prescribing of thyroxine in general practice.

The cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2J2 arachidonic acid epoxygenase gene was down-regulated at a pre-translational level in human hepatoma-derived HepG2 cells incubated in a hypoxic environment; under these conditions, the expression of c-Jun and c-Fos mRNA and protein was increased. The 5'-upstream region of the CYP2J2 gene was isolated by amplification of a 2341 bp fragment and putative regulatory elements that resembled activator protein-1 (AP-1)-like sequences were identified. From transient transfection analysis, c-Jun was found to strongly activate a CYP2J2 -luciferase reporter construct, but co-transfection with plasmids encoding c-Fos or c-Fos-related antigens, Fra-1 and -2, abrogated reporter activity.
