Earth abundant transition metal nitrides (TMNs) are a promising group of catalysts for a wide range of thermocatalytic, electrocatalytic and photocatalytic reactions, with potential to achieve high activity and selectivity while reducing reliance on the use of Pt-group metals. However, current fundamental understanding of the active sites of these materials and the mechanisms by which selective transformations occur is somewhat lacking. Recent investigations of these materials from our group and others have utilized probe molecules, model surfaces, and techniques to elucidate the origin of their activity, strong metal-support interactions, and unique d-band electronic structures.

Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) control cell and organism growth through evolutionarily conserved signaling pathways. The mammalian acid-labile subunit (ALS) is a secreted protein that complexes with IGFs to modulate their activity. Recent work has shown that a Drosophila homolog of ALS, dALS, can also complex with and modulate the activity of a Drosophila IGF.

Epithelial tubes are the functional units of many organs, but little is known about how tube sizes are established. Using the Drosophila tracheal system as a model, we previously showed that mutations in varicose (vari) cause tubes to become elongated without increasing cell number. Here we show vari is required for accumulation of the tracheal size-control proteins Vermiform and Serpentine in the tracheal lumen.

We report new w- fluorescent balancers scorable from stage 13 through adulthood that bear a nuclear-localized yellow fluorescent protein marker directly driven by dfd and GMR enhancer elements. The utility of this marker is enhanced by identification of an anti-GFP/yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) serum that is compatible with heat fixation.

Workers in the catering industry are at greater risk of exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) when smoke-free workplace policies are not in force. We determined the exposure of catering workers to SHS in Hong Kong and their risk of death from heart disease and lung cancer. Nonsmoking catering workers were provided with screening at their workplaces and at a central clinic.
