Accuracy of computer-assisted mandibular reconstructions using patient-specific implants in combination with CAD/CAM fabricated transfer keys.

Background: A new method in mandible reconstruction has recently been developed using patient-specific mandible reconstruction plates (PSMP) after preoperative computer planning using CAD/CAM procedures. To transfer the virtual planned position of the PSMP into the intraoperative situs resection margins and plate position is determined by using surgical guides made by CAD/CAM procedures as well (PSMP-method).

Methods: Mandibular reconstruction with the PSMP-method was performed on 18 patients.

Autogenous bone grafts in oral implantology-is it still a "gold standard"? A consecutive review of 279 patients with 456 clinical procedures.

Background: This study assessed the clinical outcomes of graft success rate and early implant survival rate after preprosthetic alveolar ridge reconstruction with autologous bone grafts.

Methods: A consecutive retrospective study was conducted on all patients who were treated at the military outpatient clinic of the Department of Oral and Plastic Maxillofacial Surgery at the military hospital in Ulm (Germany) in the years of 2009 until 2011 with autologous bone transplantation prior to secondary implant insertion. Intraoral donor sites (crista zygomatico-alveolaris, ramus mandible, symphysis mandible, and anterior sinus wall) and extraoral donor site (iliac crest) were used.

Principles of oral surgery for prevention of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Objectives: Principles and workflow are described to prevent bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) when oral surgery is necessary in patients taking bisphosphonates.

Material And Method: A total of 117 surgical procedures were performed on 68 patients taking bisphosphonates. The basis of the treatment was (1) use of perioperative antibiotics; (2) after dentoalveolar surgical procedures, bone edges were smoothed and mucoperiosteal flaps were prepared to ensure tension-free wound closure; (3) sutures were not removed until 14 days postsurgery; (4) long-term results were evaluated.

Prevalence of cone beam computed tomography imaging findings according to the clinical stage of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Objectives: Investigations of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) imaging are rare. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of typical radiological findings of BRONJ in CBCT.

Methods: Twenty-seven CBCTs of BRONJ sites were assessed on the basis of the radiological findings (cancellous bone destruction, cortical bone erosion, sequestration, osteosclerosis, and periostal bone formation) and put in relation to the severity of the BRONJ sites.

The role of surgical therapy in the management of intravenous bisphosphonates-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Objectives: Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) seems resistant to conventional treatment approaches. We report a study with a surgical concept characterized by resection of the necrotic bone followed by sufficient wound closure.

Study Design: In a clinical study of 24 patients with 33 sites of BRONJ, the surgical basis of the treatment was as follows: (1) conservative treatment with antimicrobiological rinsing, (2) resection of the entire necrotic bone and smoothening of any sharp bone edges, and (3) coverage of the remaining bone by use of a bilayered wound closure.

Reconstructive and ophthalmologic outcomes following resection of spheno-orbital meningiomas.

Purpose: To assess long-term stability and aesthetic and functional outcomes of orbital reconstruction after resection of spheno-orbital meningiomas using calvarial bone grafts.

Methods: A series of 21 patients were retrospectively examined after an average follow-up period of 65.6 months with regard to their personal satisfaction and also proptosis, ocular function, and reconstructive outcome.
