Objective: To determine whether adalimumab administration before mechanical ventilation reduces ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI).
Methods: Eighteen rats randomized into 3 groups underwent mechanical ventilation for 3 hours with a fraction of inspired oxygen = 0.40% including a low tidal volume group (n = 6), where tidal volume = 8mL/kg and positive end-expiratory pressure = 5cmH2O; a high tidal volume group (n = 6), where tidal volume = 35mL/kg and positive end-expiratory pressure = 0; and a pretreated + high tidal volume group (n = 6) where adalimumab (100ug/kg) was administered intraperitoneally 24 hours before mechanical ventilation + tidal volume = 35mL/kg and positive end-expiratory pressure = 0.
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or undifferentiated arthritis (UA) in the CONAART database (Argentine Consortium for Early Arthritis) were assessed for genetic risk factors for RA, specifically for HLA-DRB1 alleles and the PTPN22 rs2476601 polymorphism associated with progression to RA. This is a case-control study. Blood samples were obtained to determine HLA-DRB1 genotypes by PCR-SSO Luminex and PTPN22 (rs2476601) polymorphism by allelic discrimination.

The diagnosis of SLE was based on the presence of: malar rash, oral ulcers, thrombocytopenia, antinuclear antibodies, IgM anticardiolipin antibody, and lupus anticoagulant. Renal and liver diseases were ruled out.

This is a cross-sectional study of 1,305 patients (729 with rheumatoid arthritis and 576 with undifferentiated arthritis) from CONAART, the Argentine Consortium for Early Arthritis that includes patients older than 16 years with <2 years of disease. Sociodemographic data, clinical characteristics of the disease and smoking history were collected.

Elastofibroma dorsi is a benign, slow-growing soft tissue tumor. Poorly symptomatic, it raises an important differential diagnosis with benign and malignant tumors of the subscapular region, and with a differential diagnosis with shoulder pain and snapping scapula. It is seen in elderly women and occurs more frequently in the subscapular region, although it has been reported in several locations.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe report the case of a 38-year-old female patient, affected with Kartagener syndrome (primary ciliary dyskinesia), who developed seropositive and erosive rheumatoid arthritis. According to our review, there are only 6 cases reported so far with this association without a definite etiopathogenic linkage recognized in common. Chronic infections resulting from the ciliary dysfunction might be a trigger for rheumatoid arthritis.
