Article Synopsis
  • Acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance is essential for global polio eradication, helping to identify poliovirus reintroductions especially from endemic areas.
  • In Spain, from 1998 to 2015, there were 678 reported AFP cases, with a mean notification rate of 0.58 cases per 100,000 population under 15 years, showing a decline in rates from the first (1998-2006) to the second period (2007-2015).
  • Although no wild poliovirus infections occurred, other types of polioviruses were detected and the majority of AFP cases were associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome, highlighting the importance of ongoing and improved surveillance for enteroviruses.

Objectives: Spain has been a pioneer in the implementation of rapid HIV testing programmes in pharmacies to increase access to testing. However, no formal evaluation of the effectiveness of these programmes has been carried out to date. Our aim was to evaluate the ability of a novel in-pharmacy rapid HIV testing programme to promote diagnosis and reach vulnerable populations.

Objetive: To describe linkage to care among new HIV diagnoses in Spain; and to estimate factors associated to linkage to care within three months after diagnosis.

Methods: The distribution of the time elapsing between the date of HIV diagnosis and the date of first determination of CD4 (considered to be the date of linkage to care) was calculated among new HIV diagnoses in 2010 in the seven Autonomous Regions participating, where data on date of CD4 count was available. Linkage to care was considered «correct» if done within three months after diagnosis.

Introduction: It is believed that 5% of all cancers are hereditary, on being caused by mutations in the germinal line in cancer susceptibility genes. The hereditary pattern in the majority of cases is autosomal dominant. Genetic tests are only recommended to individuals whose personal or family history is highly suggestive of a hereditary cancer.

An experimental model of pressure-induced optic nerve damage would greatly facilitate the understanding of the cellular events leading to ganglion cell death, and how they are influenced by intraocular pressure and other risk factors associated to glaucoma. The aim of the present report was to study the effect of a long-term increase of intraocular pressure in rats induced by intracameral injections of hyaluronic acid with respect to electroretinographic activity and retinal and optic nerve histology. For this purpose, hyaluronic acid was injected weekly in the rat anterior chamber of one eye, whereas the contralateral eye was injected with saline solution.

After renal transplantation, persistent glomerular disease affecting the native kidneys typically causes albuminuria, at least for a period of time, making it difficult to determine in a noninvasive fashion whether proteinuria originates in the native kidneys or the renal allograft. To address this problem, dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using gadolinium (Gd)-based albumin-bound blood pool contrast agent (MS325) to localize proteinuria was investigated. Glomerular proteinuria was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by intravenous injection of puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN), whereas control rats received physiologic saline vehicle.

Glutamate-induced excitotoxicity has been proposed to mediate the death of retinal ganglion cells in glaucoma. The metabolic dependence of glutamatergic neurons upon glia via the glutamate/glutamine cycle to provide the precursor for neurotransmitter glutamate is well established. Thus, the aim of the present work was to study the retinal glutamate/glutamine activity in eyes with hypertension induced by intracameral injections of hyaluronic acid (HA).

Three-dimensional (3-D) angiographic methods are gaining acceptance for evaluation of atherosclerotic disease. However, measurement of vessel stenosis from 3-D angiographic methods can be problematic due to limited image resolution and contrast. We present a method for reconstructing vessel surfaces from 3-D angiographic methods that allows for objective measurement of vessel stenosis.
