Background And Purpose: Primary palliative care (PC) aims to improve the quality of life for patients with acute ischemic stroke but is often misinterpreted as withdrawal of care. The self-fulfilling prophecy withdrawal bias is feared in this context of PC's early implementation. This study evaluates stroke patients who died in the hospital to determine the impact of PC evaluation.

Background: Since the implementation of the stroke care line in Brazil, the relationship (adequacy) of costs spent during hospitalization with the Brazilian Ministry of Health indicators for a stroke unit have not yet been analyzed.
Aims: This study aimed to assess the adequacy of a comprehensive stroke center for key performance indicators and analyze the costs involved in hospitalization. We verified the association between stroke severity at admission and care costs during hospitalization.
Introduction: The assessment of collateral circulation in acute ischemic stroke management is essential. Modern tools, such as Brainomix's e-CTA, powered by artificial intelligence, provide detailed insights into collateral assessment. This retrospective study aims to identify factors contributing to favorable collateral status and compare outcomes between patients with good collaterals (grade 3) and fair collaterals (grade 0-2).

Methods: Patients with a first ischemic stroke or intraparenchymal hemorrhage from the Joinville Stroke Registry were analyzed retrospectively. Using the 5-level version of the EuroQol-5D questionnaire, HRQoL was calculated for all patients 3 months and 1 year after stroke, stratified by mRS score (0-2 or 3-5).
Background: In recent decades, considerable advances have been made in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (IS) and its prevention. However, even after treatment, approximately two-thirds of patients with IS have some degree of disability that requires rehabilitation, along with an increased possibility of developing psychiatric disorders, particularly depression.
Objective: To determine the predictors of post-stroke depression in a 6-month period in patients with IS.
Background: Stroke is one of the major causes of disability and mortality worldwide. Up to 30% of individuals who experience stroke die within 30 days, and more than 50% of those who survive will have some degree of disability. There are some predetermining factors based on admission data that could be used to objectively assess the odds of poor outcomes, including the Ischemic Stroke Predictive Risk Score (IScore).

Objective: To analyze predictors and outcomes of QoL after stroke using a validated scale in our population.
Methods: Our study included patients who had their first ischemic stroke and were followed in the outpatient clinic for at least 6 months from stroke index.
Objectives: To evaluate the determining factors of severe functional impairment (SFI) outcome at discharge and in-hospital mortality in patients who had an acute ischaemic stroke and thus favouring early implementation of primary palliative care (PC).
Methods: A retrospective descriptive study by the analysis of 515 patients who had an acute ischaemic stroke admitted at stroke unit, aged≥18 years, from January 2017 to December 2018. Previous clinical and functional status data, National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) on admission, and data related to the evolution during hospitalisation were evaluated, relating them to the SFI outcome at discharge and death.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has wrought negative consequences concerning quality of care for stroke patients since its onset. Prospective population-based data about stroke care in the pandemic are limited. This study aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on stroke profile and care in Joinville, Brazil.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the age- and sex-specific mortality rates related to stroke in the state of Paraná, Brazil, between 2007 and 2016.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, residents in the state of Paraná were selected by death certificates (from 2007-2016); the basic cause of death was stroke.
Background And Purpose: Precise evaluation of brain computerized tomography (CT) is a crucial step in acute ischemic stroke evaluation. Electronic Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (E-ASPECTS) helps in the selection of patients who may be eligible for thrombolysis. This paper seeks to assess the performance of emergency physicians (EPs) in the evaluation of ASPECTS scores with and without the use of E-ASPECTS and to compare their results with neuroradiologists.

As in Part I, Part II is also based on recently available evidence from randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and other guidelines. Part II covers disorders of communication, dysphagia, postural control and balance, ataxias, spasticity, upper limb rehabilitation, gait, cognition, unilateral spatial neglect, sensory impairments, home rehabilitation, medication adherence, palliative care, cerebrovascular events related to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, the future of stroke rehabilitation, and stroke websites to support patients and caregivers.

Members of the group participated in web discussion forums with predefined themes, followed by videoconference meetings in which issues were discussed, leading to a consensus. These guidelines, divided into two parts, focus on the implications of recent clinical trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses in stroke rehabilitation literature.

Objective: To develop a stroke databank for integrating clinical or functional data and benchmarks from stroke patients.
Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional, prospective study.
Background: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been considered a potential mechanism of embolic stroke of undetermined origin.
Objective: The aim of the present study was to identify the features of the right-to-left shunt (RLS) in patients with undetermined embolic ischemic stroke and compare them with those of patients with non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted with 168 patients with stroke and RLS separated into the following two groups: the undetermined embolic stroke group (UES group) and non-cardioembolic stroke group (NCES group).
Background: Syphilis is an endemic disease, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with vascular involvement in large vessels (aortitis), but no clear relationship with stroke patients, except for those who presented with meningovascular neurosyphilis.
Objective: To investigate the relationship between a positive history of syphilis determined by serological testing and ischemic stroke etiology, particularly small vessel disease (SVD).
Methods: In total, 269 first-ever ischemic stroke patients admitted to the stroke unit were tested for syphilis.

Background: Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAT) is a therapeutic option for patients with minor ischemic stroke (IS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA). No study has evaluated the incidence of early bleeding in patients with moderate to major ischemic stroke. The current study aimed to analyze both the frequency of early bleeding and hospital morbidity related to DAT for either acute IS or TIA regardless of admission National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score.

Background: The rapid evaluation of non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography (NCCT) brain scans in patients with anterior stroke symptoms saves time and favors optimal and prompt treatment. e-ASPECTS is a tool that automatically calculates the Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) values, leading to a more accurate and timely image evaluation.
Objective: To determine the ability of e-ASPECTS in differentiating images with and without injury.
