Purpose: To examine the prevalence of adherence to hearing aids and determine their rejection causes.

Methods: This study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting terms for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We performed an electronic search using PubMed, BVS, and Embase.

Background: Horizontal Canal Cupulolithiasis (hc-BPPV-cu) can mimic a pathology of central origin, so a careful examination is essential to prevent misdiagnosis.

Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional cohort study of 45 patients suffering from suspected hc-BPPV-cu. We recorded whether patients first presented through an ENT Emergency Department (ED) or through an Outpatient Otolaryngology Clinic (OC).

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the high rates of malnutrition in infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) and emphasizes the importance of early nutritional assessment and intervention for better health outcomes.
  • Using a modified Delphi technique, specialists developed a consensus document that includes 150 recommendations for nutritional assessment and management based on clinical expertise and literature.
  • Key recommendations address the nutritional needs of infants with CHD, highlighting the need for intensive preoperative nutrition therapy, follow-up by pediatric nutrition units, and regular evaluations by cardiologists to achieve nutrition goals.

Background: Although diagnostic criteria have been established for superior canal dehiscence syndrome, cases in which the diagnosis is not easy are frequent. On those occasions, some tests such as vibration-induced nystagmus or vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials can offer invaluable help due to their high sensitivity and specificity.

Methods: We studied 30 patients showing superior canal dehiscence or "near-dehiscence" in a CT scan.

Objective: The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the epidemiology of pain in the Spanish working population and to investigate the incremental costs of the different levels of pain on medical costs and productivity losses.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of costs of pain in the Spanish working population from a societal perspective using data from a national representative survey.

Results: Data from the 9919 respondents were analyzed.

Surface flatness assessment is necessary for quality control of metal sheets manufactured from steel coils by roll leveling and cutting. Mechanical-contact-based flatness sensors are being replaced by modern laser-based optical sensors that deliver accurate and dense reconstruction of metal sheet surfaces for flatness index computation. However, the surface range images captured by these optical sensors are corrupted by very specific kinds of noise due to vibrations caused by mechanical processes like degreasing, cleaning, polishing, shearing, and transporting roll systems.

Background: Nurses and midwives play a critical role in the provision of care and the optimization of health services resources worldwide, which is particularly relevant during the current COVID-19 pandemic. However, they can only provide quality services if their work environment provides adequate conditions to support them. Today the employment and working conditions of many nurses worldwide are precarious, and the current pandemic has prompted more visibility to the vulnerability to health-damaging factors of nurses' globally.

Genetic engineering has been a topic of discussion for over 50 years, but it is only recently that gene editing has become a reality. CRISPR biotechnologies have made gene editing much safer, precise and feasible. We have witnessed the first cases of human germline genetic modification resulting in live births, conducted by He Jiankui.

This paper describes a method for calibrating multi camera and multi laser 3D triangulation systems, particularly for those using Scheimpflug adapters. Under this configuration, the focus plane of the camera is located at the laser plane, making it difficult to use traditional calibration methods, such as chessboard pattern-based strategies. Our method uses a conical calibration object whose intersections with the laser planes generate stepped line patterns that can be used to calculate the camera-laser homographies.

Flatness sensors are required for quality control of metal sheets obtained from steel coils by roller leveling and cutting systems. This article presents an innovative system for real-time robust surface estimation of flattened metal sheets composed of two line lasers and a conventional 2D camera. Laser plane triangulation is used for surface height retrieval along virtual surface fibers.

Evidence on the impact of MCS on pediatric heart transplant survival is still scarce related to congenital heart disease patients including univentricular physiology as well as the risk factors for complications. We performed a retrospective review of all urgent pediatric (aged ≤16 years) HT from 2004 to 2014 in the Spanish Pediatric Heart Transplant Registry Group. Patients were stratified into two groups: urgent 0 (MCS at HT) and urgent 1 (non-MCS at HT).

Background: Filamin C (encoded by the FLNC gene) is essential for sarcomere attachment to the plasmatic membrane. FLNC mutations have been associated with myofibrillar myopathies, and cardiac involvement has been reported in some carriers. Accordingly, since 2012, the authors have included FLNC in the genetic screening of patients with inherited cardiomyopathies and sudden death.

We report a case of a 12-yr-old boy referred to our unit with congenital generalized lipodystrophy and dilated cardiomyopathy related to a lamin gene mutation. He progressively developed end-stage heart failure and was referred for heart transplant evaluation. The patient's lipid profile, glucose level, and renal function were normal, and vascular retinopathy was ruled out.

Aortico-left ventricular tunnel (ALVT) is a rare congenital paravalvar communication between the aorta and the left ventricle. This anomaly has been associated with the right coronary artery (RCA) arising directly from the tunnel. Surgical repair of this later condition is challenging and is usually undertaken by closure of the ventricular and aortic ends of the tunnel and transfer of the RCA.

Background And Aims: Meningococcal disease remains one of the most important infectious causes of death in industrialized countries. The highly diverse clinical presentation and prognosis of Neisseria meningitidis infections are the result of complex host genetics and environmental interactions. We investigated whether mitochondrial genetic background contributes to meningococcal disease (MD) susceptibility.

Introduction: After the implantation of an intracardiac device for the closure of an atrial septal defect, most centres follow the guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis to reduce the risk of infectious endocarditis, at least during the first 6 months after the implantation, if there is no evidence of residual shunt. The aim of this report is to evaluate the knowledge, fulfillment and adherence to the recommendations of our centre on the prevention of endocarditis, of the families of patients subjected to percutaneous closure of an ASD.

Patients And Methods: We performed an observational retrospective study of 51 paediatric patients subjected to percutaneous closure of an ASD in the "Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de La Coruña", between 1999 and 2008.

Introduction: To analyze the short-term results of laparoscopic colorectal surgery (LCRS) in the Canary Islands.

Material And Methods: A questionnaire was sent to hospitals performing laparoscopy and retrospective data on demographic, perioperative and pathological variables in 144 patients who underwent LCRS between May 1993 and May 2003 were obtained.

Results: Sixty-five men and 79 women underwent colon (n=126) and rectal (n=18) surgery in the last 16 months of the study period.
