Objectives: The number of drug overdoses and drug-related deaths has increased across the United States in recent years. Reports of suspected opioid drug overdoses identified through emergency medical services (EMS) are valuable sources of information for shaping the public health response to drug overdoses. The objective of this study was to describe trends in the number of EMS-reported suspected opioid drug overdose events in South Carolina from 2019 through 2022.

Purpose: During the early COVID-19 pandemic, an increase in weight gain among the general population was observed; however, gestational weight gain (GWG) was not thoroughly evaluated. We evaluated changes in GWG during the pandemic closures in South Carolina.

Methods: We used live, singleton birth records to compare GWG outcomes among three pregnancy groups occurring before (January 2018-February 2020), during (March-May 2020), and after (June 2020-December 2021) pandemic closures.

Article Synopsis
  • - Using multipathogen PCR testing, 195 university students in South Carolina were found to have adenovirus type 4 infections between January and May 2022.
  • - Out of those, 43 students (22%) were also infected with other respiratory viruses simultaneously.
  • - Ongoing monitoring of these viruses is essential to prevent outbreaks in close-knit communities like college campuses.

Article Synopsis
  • - Monkeypox, which originates from an orthopoxvirus and is commonly found in Africa, has led to a public health emergency in the U.S. since its outbreak began in May 2022, with over 2,891 cases reported by late July 2022.
  • - The majority of cases (99%) are among men, with a high correlation to male-to-male sexual or intimate contact, and there are significant disparities among racial and ethnic groups, particularly among non-Hispanic White, Hispanic, and Black populations.
  • - The CDC and health agencies are focusing their response on enhancing testing, treatment, and vaccination, particularly for gay and bisexual men who are significantly impacted, while emphasizing the importance of equity and

Article Synopsis
  • Post-overdose outreach programs in Massachusetts blend police and public health efforts to engage overdose survivors, often using 911 call data and warrant checks before outreach visits.
  • A survey showed that around 57% of these programs conduct warrant checks, leading to various strategies, including outreach without addressing warrants or delaying until warrants are cleared.
  • Interviews highlight the complexities of warrant checking, revealing that motivations, tensions in police roles, and the impact on outreach strategies can lead to unintended consequences.

Importance: The use of benzodiazepines or alcohol together with opioids increases overdose risk, but characterization of co-involvement by predominant opioid subtype is incomplete to date. Understanding the use of respiratory depressants in opioid overdose deaths (OODs) is important for prevention efforts and policy making.

Objective: To assess the prevalence and number of alcohol- or benzodiazepine-involved OODs by opioid subtypes in the United States from 1999 to 2017.

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of radius, exophytic/endophytic, nearness to collecting system/sinus, anterior/posterior, and location relative to polar lines (RENAL), preoperative aspects and dimensions used for anatomical classification (PADUA), contact surface area (CSA), and preoperative assessment of volume preservation (PAVP) nephrometry scores in predicting postoperative renal functional outcomes after partial nephrectomy (PN). Few studies have compared the accuracy of tumor complexity systems directly in the same set of PN patients.

Materials And Methods: Patients treated with robotic, laparoscopic, or open PN having available imaging (n = 344) were examined.
