Denture-related oral mucosal lesions in Alzheimer disease: a case-control study.

The aim of this case-control study was to evaluate the association between denture-related oral mucosal lesions and Alzheimer disease (AD) in older adults (60 years and older). Seventy elderly adults (35 with AD and 35 classified as mentally healthy) were included in this study, which was carried out in a Brazilian medical center. Clinical data on oral lesions and mucosal findings were recorded, including alterations in the color or appearance of any lesions, if present.

Advanced dementia in a sample of Brazilian elderly: Sociodemographic and morbidity analysis.

Introduction:: To investigate the sociodemographic and morbidity profile of advanced dementia patients and sociodemographic data of their primary caregivers.

Method:: Data was obtained from 67 elderly recruited for an observational prospective study, through interviews performed with primary caregivers. For statistical analysis, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS(r)) for Windowsr, version 19.

Association between DCHS2 gene and mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease in an elderly Brazilian sample.

Objectives: In 2012, Kamboh and colleagues published a genome-wide association study that identified the DCHS2 gene (rs1466662 T/A) influencing the age at onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We aimed to investigate if there is association between the DCHS2 gene and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and AD in a sample of the Brazilian population.

Methods: 143 controls, 79 aMCI and 299 AD patients were selected and submitted to the same protocol of tests.

Depressive symptoms are associated with cognitive-functional impairment in normal aging older adults (NA). However, less is known about this effect on people with mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and mild Alzheimer's disease dementia (AD). We investigated this relationship along with the NA-MCI-AD continuum by reanalyzing a previously published dataset.

Remission of cognitive deficits in Parkinson's disease: recovery from a nonamnestic mild cognitive impairment or psychiatric symptoms remission?

Mild cognitive impairment is a clinical condition more frequent in patients with Parkinson's disease than in general population. The nonamnestic presentations, usually characterized by executive dysfunction, are most prevalent. We present a case report of a Parkinson's disease patient diagnosed with nonamnestic mild cognitive impairment that showed complete remission of cognitive symptoms after one year.

Ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, and beta-carotene reduce oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokines in mononuclear cells of Alzheimer's disease patients.

Objectives: The in vitro effect of a vitamin complex in generating and reducing oxidative species in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC) and plasma of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and healthy subjects (HS) was evaluated.

Methods: Two concentrations of a vitamin complex ([A] and [20A]) with ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, and beta-carotene were incubated with either mononuclear cells or plasma. The generation of oxidizing species was measured in a luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay and the reducing response by the MTT dye reduction assay.

Background: dizziness is a frequent complaint in the geriatric population and has a negative impact in the life quality of these individuals.

Aim: to correlate the types of dizziness and alterations in the caloric test and to verify the frequency of presbyvertigo in an elderly population with dizziness.

Method: The records of 132 patients aged over 60 and with balance disturbance were reviewed.
