Although malodour formation on textiles and in washing machines has been reported to be a very relevant problem in domestic laundry, the processes leading to bad odours have not been studied intensively. In particular, the smell often described as "wet-and-dirty-dustcloth-like malodour" had not been reproduced previously. We developed a lab model based on a bacterial mixture of , , and , which can produce this odour type and which might allow the detailed investigation of this problem and the development of counteractions.

Exploring the potential of eucalyptol as a masking agent for aversive odors, we found that eucalyptol masks the olfactory but not the trigeminal sensation of ammonia in a previous study. Here, we further investigate the processing of a mixture consisting of eucalyptol and ammonia, two olfactory-trigeminal stimuli. We presented the two pure odors and a mixture thereof to 33 healthy participants.

Odor masking is a very prominent problem in our daily routines, mainly concerning unpleasant sweat or toilet odors. In the current study we explored the effectiveness of odor masking both on a behavioral and neuronal level. By definition, participants cannot differentiate a fully masked unpleasant odor from the pleasant pure odor used as a masking agent on a behavioral level.

Eucalyptol is a substance with rather pleasant olfactory and trigeminal characteristics and is thus suggested as an efficient tool for malodor coverage. We consider the partial least squares algorithm for dependent data and study the consequences of ignoring the dependence both theoretically and numerically. Ignoring nonstationary dependence structures can lead to inconsistent estimation, but a simple modification yields consistent estimation. A protein dynamics example illustrates the superior predictive power of the proposed method.

Photochromic nucleosides were designed that combine the structural features and molecular recognition properties of nucleic acids with the light-sensitivity of diarylethenes. Target compounds 1a-c consist of a 7-deazaadenosine unit that is linked to a thiophene as the second aryl functionality via a 1,2-cyclopentenyl linker. These nucleoside analogues undergo a reversible electrocyclic rearrangement, generating strongly colored closed-ring isomers upon irradiation with UV-light, while exposure to light in the visible range triggers the cycloreversion to the colorless opened-ring form.
