Background: Here we study the effect of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) on bone cell precursors, turnover and cytokines involved in the control of bone cell formation and activity.
Methods: We enrolled in the study 21 T2DM women and 21 non diabetic controls matched for age and body mass index (BMI). In each subject we measured bone cell precursors, Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor κB (RANKL), Osteoprotegerin (OPG), Sclerostin (SCL) and Dickoppf-1 (DKK-1) as cytokines involved in the control of osteoblast and osteoclast formation and activity, bone density (BMD) and quality trough trabecular bone score (TBS) and bone turnover.
Background: Lung ultrasonography (LUS) has emerged as a noninvasive tool for the differential diagnosis of pulmonary diseases. However, its use for the diagnosis of acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) still raises some concerns. We tested the hypothesis that an integrated approach implementing LUS with clinical assessment would have higher diagnostic accuracy than a standard workup in differentiating ADHF from noncardiogenic dyspnea in the ED.

Nine healthy men less than 60 years old with traumatic fractures were enrolled. The parameters circulating OB precursors (osteocalcin+/alkaline phosphatase+/CD15- cells) and osteoclast precursors (CD14+/CD11b+/vitronectin receptor + cells) were measured by flow cytometry; bone formation markers and TGFbeta1, by ELISA; and PTH, by RIA in serum on arrival at the emergency department (baseline) and 15 days after fracture.
