[Hematoma of the anterior rectus abdominis muscle as the first manifestation of lymphoproliferative disease after renal transplantation].

Rectus sheath hematoma results from the rupture of rectus muscle vessels by trauma, coagulation disorders or anticoagulant therapy, but it can occur spontaneously too. Its prognosis is good. On the other hand, posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) are serious and potentially fatal complications in transplant recipients.

[Anesthesia for inguinal hernioplasty: a comparison of techniques].

New surgical and modern anaesthesia techniques for inguinal hernioplasty have significantly reduced the duration of the procedure and the postoperative length of hospital stay. From 1994 to 1998, 405 patients with a mean age of 54.7 years (range: from 18 to 90) undergoing inguinal hernioplasty were studied.

An immune-enhancing enteral diet reduces mortality rate and episodes of bacteremia in septic intensive care unit patients.

Objective: To determine whether early enteral feeding in a septic intensive care unit (ICU) population, using a formula supplemented with arginine, mRNA, and omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil (Impact), improves clinical outcomes, when compared with a common use, high protein enteral feed without these nutrients.

Design: A prospective, randomized, multicentered trial.

Setting: ICUs of six hospitals in Spain.

Anticoagulant therapy modifies fibrinolytic dysfunction in chronic atrial fibrillation.

Objective: We evaluated the changes in fibrinolytic activation markers before starting anticoagulation, at 1 and 6 months following the introduction of anticoagulant therapy.

Design And Methods: Tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), its endothelial inhibitor (PAI-1), plasmin:antiplasmin complexes (PAPc), modified antithrombin III (ATM), D dimer (D-D) and fibrinogen (FIB) were measured in 36 patients with chronic atrial fibrillation. Fifteen of them had rheumatic mitral stenosis and 21 had nonrheumatic atrial fibrillation.

Folate pathway gene alterations in patients with neural tube defects.

Periconceptional folate supplementation reduces the recurrence and occurrence risk of neural tube defects (NTD) by as much as 70%, yet the protective mechanism remains unknown. Inborn errors of folate and homocysteine metabolism may be involved in the aetiology of NTDs. Previous studies have demonstrated that both homozygosity for the C677T mutation in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene, and combined heterozygosity for the C677T and for another mutation in the same gene, the A1298C polymorphism, represent genetic risk factors for NTDs.

Tactile evoked spikes in children.

Tactile evoked spikes (TES) are a well known EEG feature in children. We reviewed our previous studies concerning this phenomenon, with special reference to the influence of sleep and stimulation rate, the relation with middle-long latency somatosensory evoked potentials (MLSEP) and the relation between TES and spontaneous spikes in the same individual. New data were obtained by re-evaluating 566 children with TES, by assessing MLSEP from each finger, in 15 subjects with TES, and by studying MLSEP following posterior tibial nerve stimulation in 12 children with TES.

Isolation and characterization of two new methanesulfonic acid-degrading bacterial isolates from a Portuguese soil sample.

Two novel bacterial strains that can utilize methanesulfonic acid as a source of carbon and energy were isolated from a soil sample collected in northern Portugal. Morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular biological characterization of the two isolates indicate that strain P1 is a pink-pigmented facultative methylotroph belonging to the genus Methylobacterium, while strain P2 is a restricted methylotroph belonging to the genus Hyphomicrobium. Both strains are strictly aerobic, degrade methanesulfonate, and release small quantities of sulfite into the medium.

No evidence of a major locus for benign familial infantile convulsions on chromosome 19q12-q13.1.

Purpose: A locus for benign familial convulsions (BFICs) has been recently mapped on chromosome 19q12-13.1 by studying five families of Italian descent. The main goal of this study was to investigate the role of this locus in a set of seven newly identified families with at least three affected cases.

Estimation of the number of synapses in the cerebral cortex: methodological considerations.

In the present work we discuss several sampling procedures commonly used for counting synapses in the cerebral cortex. We compare, within the same tissue, two frequently used sterereological methods for determining the numerical density of synapses per unit volume, using as an example the estimation of the number of types of synapses by layers in the neuropil of the adult human temporal neocortex. These two methods are a size-frequency method (formula N(A)/d) and the disector method (sigmaQ-/a x h).

Further study on the specificity and incidence of neutralizing antibodies to interferon (IFN) in relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis patients treated with IFN beta-1a or IFN beta-1b.

The development of neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) to interferon (IFN) is a common phenomenon of IFN beta therapy for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients. Here we examine the specificity of NAbs developed during therapy for RRMS with recombinant interferon (rIFN) beta-1a or rIFN beta-1b, and study the effect of switching from rIFN beta-1a to rIFN beta-1b on the incidence and specificity of NAbs. The relative ability to neutralize rIFN beta-1a and beta-1b was assayed in sera positive for NAbs derived from RRMS patients treated with either rIFN beta-1a (N=9) or rIFN beta-1b (N=16), while the incidence and specificity of NAbs to IFN beta developed during therapy were studied in 50 RRMS patients who were treated for two years with rIFN beta-1a followed by a further year either switching to rIFN beta-1b (N=34) or continuing treatment with rIFN beta-1a (N=16).

Prothrombotic state and elevated levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 in mitral stenosis with and without atrial fibrillation.

Patients with mitral stenosis in sinus rhythm are in a prothrombotic state and have fibrinolytic dysfunction, shown by an increase in levels of the inhibitor of tissue plasminogen activator, D-dimer, and modified antithrombin III. This state may be observed even in patients without dilated left atria (diameter < or =45 mm).

Lipid peroxidation in proliferative vitreoretinopathies.

Purpose: To study the lipid hydroperoxide activity in vasoproliferative and fibroproliferative retinal disorders.

Methods: Vitreous body samples from patients undergoing vitrectomy because of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR; n = 12) or proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR; n = 15), and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment/macular hole/epiretinal membranes as the comparison group (CG; n = 14), were analysed for protein content and basal and induced lipid peroxidation (LPO), as determined by the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) test and LPO 586 commercial kit. The antioxidant activity for superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) was also assayed.

Heterologous expression of soluble methane monooxygenase genes in methanotrophs containing only particulate methane monooxygenase.

The methanotrophs Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath) and Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b contain particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) and soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) genes. Other methanotrophs such as Methylomicrobium album BG8 and Methylocystis parvus OBBP contain only pMMO genes. Although molecular genetic techniques are poorly developed in methanotrophs, sMMO genes were expressed in methanotrophs normally containing only pMMO genes.

Harmonisation of risk assessment (RA) is one of the priorities for sound chemical management set by Chapter 19, Agenda 21 of the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development (UNCED) 1992 Earth Summit. The benefits of harmonisation are self evident and include transportability and consistency of RA outcomes, transparency and efficiency of process, and credible science. The outcomes of carcinogen RA are a description or classification of the carcinogenic hazard, the conditions under which cancers may be induced, and an estimate of a dose or exposure which poses a minimal, or otherwise defined, risk in exposed human populations.

Hypofibrinolysis in atrial fibrillation.

Background: There is a high incidence of systemic embolism in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation. A hypercoagulable state has been demonstrated, but the fibrinolytic system is rarely studied.

Methods: Plasma levels of modified antithrombin III (ATM), tissue plasminogen activator (TPA), its inhibitor (PAI-1), TPA-PAI-1 complexes and plasmin-antiplasmin complexes (PAP), d -dimer, and fibrinogen were measured in plasma from 36 patients with chronic atrial fibrillation.

Macular edema computer-aided evaluation in ocular vein occlusions.

This paper is concerned with the use of digital fundus imaging to detect, quantify, and follow up macular angiographic leakage due to retinal vein occlusions. Images were matched automatically. We detected those pixels with a high increment in gray level within the closest area to the foveal center.

[Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Report of four cases].

Langerhans cell histiocytosis implies the proliferation and accumulation of anomalous, cytologically benign tissue macrophages in a given site. In the Hospital General y Universitario of Alicante, Spain, from 1975 to 1996 four patients presented with granulomatosis and otorhinolaryngological signs and symptoms: a 7-year-old girl with a right mastoid eosinophil granuloma, a 2-month-old boy with Letterer-Siwe syndrome whose illness started as acute mastoiditis, a 23-month-old boy who developed eosinophil granulomas of both mastoids and one ischium, and an 8-month-old girl with a right zygomatico-temporal eosinophil granuloma. The treatment and clinical course of each case is described and compared with the results of other authors.

Local changes in GTP-binding protein immunoreactivities in human epileptogenic neocortex.

The relative levels of guanine nucleotide-binding protein alpha-subunits Gi1alpha, Gi2alpha, Gi3alpha, Go(alpha), Gs(alpha), and Gx/z(alpha) were measured in neocortex removed at surgery from patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy. Immunoreactivity was quantified using specific polyclonal antisera against the Galpha-subunits according to the Laurell "rocket" immunoelectrophoresis technique.
