This paper proposes a hybrid control framework based on internal model concepts, sliding mode control methodology, and fractional-order calculus theory. As a result, a modified Smith predictor (SP) is proposed for nonlinear systems with significant delays. The particular predictive approach enhances the sliding mode control (SMC) controller's transient responses for dead-time processes, and the SMC gives the predictive structure robustness for model mismatches by combining the previous methods with fractional order concepts; the result is a dynamical sliding mode controller.

A hybrid control framework is proposed as an alternative for long time delays in chemical processes. The hybrid approach mixes the numerical methods in an internal mode control (IMC) structure, which uses the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to improve the adjustment of the controller parameters. Simulation tests are carried out on linear systems of high order and inverse response, both with dominant delay, and tests on a nonlinear process (chemical reactor).

Lipid-based nanoparticles (LNPs) for the delivery of mRNA have jumped to the forefront of non-viral gene delivery. Despite this exciting development, poor endosomal escape after LNP cell entry remains an unsolved, rate-limiting bottleneck. Chromoblastomycosis is an implantation mycosis occurring among adults working in farms or with soil in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. is the most important agent in the tropical areas, while , although not a predominant agent, is found in the lowlands under the same conditions as the  species. Introduction: Invasive mycosis of the central nervous system represent a diverse group of diseases that have gradually emerged as not only opportunistic infections in patients with immune susceptibility due to congenital and acquired deficiency, immunomodulation, solid organ and stem cell transplantation, hematological malignancies, and chronic steroid use but also in selected risk populations such as low weight preterm infants, patients with shunted hydrocephalus and external ventricular drainages, skull base surgery, and head injury.

Objectives: The purpose of this review is to familiarize the pediatric neurosurgeon with the most common mycosis and their clinical scenarios which can be encountered in the clinical practice, with special emphasis on clinical, radiological, and laboratory diagnosis beyond classical microorganism cultures as well as options in medical and surgical treatment given the high incidence of morbidity and mortality associated with these challenging entities.

Methods: We conducted an online database review (Ovid, PubMed) gathering relevant English language literature published in the last 20 years with special emphasis on recent breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of invasive mycosis of the CNS as well as reported cases within the pediatric neurosurgical literature and their surgical management.

Synthetic cannabinoids are the largest and most structurally diverse class of new psychoactive substances, with manufacturers often using isomerism to evade detection and circumvent legal restriction. The regioisomeric methoxy- and fluorine-substituted analogs of SDB-006 (N-benzyl-1-pentyl-1H-indole-3-carboxamide) were synthesized and could not be differentiated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), but were distinguishable by liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight-MS (LC-QTOF-MS). In a fluorescence-based plate reader membrane potential assay, SDB-006 acted as a potent agonist at human cannabinoid receptors (CB EC = 19 nM).

Background: Invasive candidiasis is an increasing problem in neonatal intensive care units worldwide and is an important cause of morbidity, mortality and prolongation of hospital stay. Background: Septic arthritis is associated with residual dysfunction in 10 to 25% of affected children. Concentrations of cytokines detected in synovial fluid of children with bacterial arthritis correlate with the severity of inflammation. Background: The pharmacokinetic profile of azithromycin supports its use as single-dose therapy for uncomplicated acute otitis media (AOM) in children.

Objective: This study was designed to (1) compare the safety of single-dose oral azithromycin, 3 daily doses of oral azithromycin, and a single dose of intramuscular ceftriaxone for the treatment of uncomplicated AOM in children, and (2) provide preliminary efficacy data to support initiation of a larger, comparative trial of single-dose azithromycin for the treatment of uncomplicated acute otitis media in children.

Methods: In this single-center pilot study, children with uncomplicated AOM were randomly assigned to receive single-dose oral azithromycin (30 mg/kg), 3-day oral azithromycin (10 mg/kg once daily), or single-dose intramuscular ceftriaxone (50 mg/kg).
