Introduction: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common urological disease that is strongly associated with the aging process and can lead to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). LUTS due to BPH can significantly affect the quality of life of many patients. Among the treatments available for BPH to improve symptoms and functional outcomes, drug therapy and surgical therapy are the options of choice.

Brain organoids encompass a large collection of in vitro stem cell-derived 3D culture systems that aim to recapitulate multiple aspects of in vivo brain development and function. First, this review provides a brief introduction to the current state-of-the-art for neuro-ectoderm brain organoid development, emphasizing their biggest advantages in comparison with classical two-dimensional cell cultures and animal models. However, despite their usefulness for developmental studies, a major limitation for most brain organoid models is the absence of contributing cell types from endodermal and mesodermal origin.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is commonly treated primarily with pharmacological therapy, while advanced reperfusion therapies (transcatheter or surgical) are considered only in cases of contraindications or failure of standard therapies. Treatment algorithms vary depending on the patient's risk, with patients at intermediate or high risk potentially requiring evaluation for such advanced reperfusion therapies. Critical scenarios, such as contraindications to systemic thrombolysis or failure of pharmacological protocols, necessitate the activation of a multidisciplinary pulmonary embolism response team (PERT) and prompt therapeutic escalation.

Background And Objectives: Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) are among the most common fractures in elderly patients, yet there is insufficient evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to determine the most appropriate interventions for their management. This study presents the long-term results of the first prospective RCT comparing surgical treatment with reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) versus nonoperative treatment in displaced PHFs in elderly patients.

Materials And Methods: Patients from a previously published RCT of 62 patients, in which RSA was compared with nonoperative treatment, were followed up long term.

  • Predictors of severe COVID-19 cases, specifically the ROX index, were analyzed in a study involving 227 patients hospitalized in Italy during the second pandemic wave, focusing on its ability to predict treatment failures like intubation or death.
  • The study found that older age, history of smoking, cardiovascular diseases, and a lower PaO2/FiO2 ratio at admission were linked to a higher likelihood of treatment failure.
  • The predictive value of the ROX index improved by the third day of hospitalization, with a critical cut-off value of 8.53 indicating a greater risk of treatment failure in patients on days 1 to 3.

The growing awareness of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and the fast-expanding array of devices aiming to percutaneously repair or replace the tricuspid valve have underscored the central role of multi-modality imaging in comprehensively assessing the anatomical and functional characteristics of TR. Accurate phenotyping of TR, the right heart, and pulmonary vasculature via echocardiography, computed tomography, and, occasionally, cardiovascular magnetic resonance and right heart catheterization is deemed crucial in choosing the most suitable treatment strategy for each patient and achieving procedural success. In the first part of the present review, key imaging factors for patient selection will be discussed.

Interpreting the phenotypes of alleles in genomes is complex. Whilst all strains are expected to carry a chromosomal copy conferring resistance to ampicillin, they may also carry mutations in chromosomal alleles or additional plasmid-borne alleles that have extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) activity and/or β-lactamase inhibitor (BLI) resistance activity. In addition, the role of individual mutations/a changes is not completely documented or understood.

Aim: High-frequency ultrasound with an 18-MHz probe (18 MHz-HFUS) plays a relevant role in the evaluation of peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Ultrahigh-frequency ultrasound with a 70-MHz probe (70 MHz-UHFUS) offers higher spatial resolution and could allow a better detection of PNI. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of HFUS and UHFUS in PNI detection.

Co-localization of spatial transcriptome information of host and pathogen can revolutionize our understanding of microbial pathogenesis. Here, we aimed to demonstrate that customized bacterial probes can be successfully used to identify host-pathogen interactions in formalin-fixed-paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues by probe-based spatial transcriptomics technology. We analyzed the spatial gene expression of bacterial transcripts with the host transcriptomic profile in murine lung tissue chronically infected with Mycobacterium abscessus embedded in agar beads.
