The Effect of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation in Peripheral and Central Hemodynamic Parameters on Resistant Hypertension: A Case Report.

Resistant hypertension (RH) is characterized by being difficult to control, even with the use of various antihypertensive drugs and is associated with target organ lesions and other comorbidities. Thus, new treatment alternatives such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) can offer benefits to resistant hypertensive patients by reducing blood pressure (BP) in a non-invasive way and without the need for the association of more antihypertensive drugs. In this case, a patient with RH was submitted to three weekly applications of TENS on the stellate ganglion lasting 40 min each for 1 month.

Colonic perineurioma of the transverse colon: presentation of a rare neoplasm in an atypical location.

A 51-year-old male with previous medical history of dyslipidemia performed screening colonoscopy, which revealed a sessile polypoid lesion with a diameter of approximately 8 mm located at the proximal transverse colon, which was resected en bloc with a cold snare. Remarkably, histopathological examination revealed a proliferation of spindle cells in the lamina propria entrapping colonic crypts without evidence of nuclear pleomorphism, mitotic figures or necrosis. On immunohistochemistry, spindle cells were diffusely positive for glucose transporter-1 and negative for S100, DOG1, CD34 and smooth muscle actin.

This study aimed to assess the association between quality of life and clinical and sociodemographic variables in type 2 diabetes patients, after they had started treatment in Primary and Specialized Health Care. This is an analytical cross-sectional study with a sampling of diabetic patients from Primary (n = 385) and Specialized (n = 385) Health Care. The dependent variable, quality of life, was evaluated by the Diabetes Quality of Life Measure - Brazil.

Dietary practices of children and adolescents with Down syndrome.

The aim of this study was to assess dietary intake, breastfeeding history, weight at birth and current weight in children and adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). Therefore, a cross-sectional, controlled study with 19 DS participants and 19 controls without DS matched by gender and age was performed. Except for vitamin D, a lower or the same frequency of insufficient intake in other micronutrients was noted in participants compared with controls.

Effect of Co co-doping on the optical properties of ZnTe:Mn nanocrystals.

We study the effect of Co co-doping on the optical properties of Mn-doped ZnTe nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in a glass matrix. Optical absorption (OA) and crystal field theory strongly indicated the substitutional incorporation of Co ions into these semiconducting NCs as well as the characteristic transitions of these ions in the visible and near infrared spectral region. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed an invariant NC lattice parameter with the incorporation of Mn and Co ions.

Effects of oral motor exercises and laser therapy on chronic temporomandibular disorders: a randomized study with follow-up.

This study investigated the efficacy of combining low-level laser therapy (LLLT) with oral motor exercises (OM-exercises) for rehabilitation of patients with chronic temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Eighty-two patients with chronic TMD and 20 healthy subjects (control group) participated in the study. Patients were randomly assigned to treatment groups: GI (LLLT + OM exercises), GII (orofacial myofunctional therapy-OMT-which contains pain relief strategies and OM-exercises), and GIII (LLLT placebo + OM-exercises) and GIV (LLLT).

Introduction: Women are more likely to present temporomandibular disorders (TMD); however, studies comparing genders in Brazilian samples are rare.

Purpose: To analyze the proportion of men and women, as well as the association between gender and age, problem duration, and TMD symptoms in patients admitted to an university clinic for treatment.

Methods: Interview and assessment data of protocols from 1,000 patients diagnosed with TMD were collected and analyzed and then divided into two groups, male (n = 177) and female (n = 823).

The in vivo neuroprotective effect of PhTx3-4, a spider toxin N-P/Q calcium channel blocker, was studied in a rat model of NMDA-induced injury of the retina. NMDA (N-Methyl-D-Aspartate)-induced retinal injury in rats reduced the b-wave amplitude by 62% ± 3.6%, indicating the severity of the insult.

Effect of time-dependent cryotherapy on redox balance of quadriceps injuries.

Muscle trauma represents a high number of injuries in professional sport and recreation and may occur through several mechanisms. This study aims at analyzing time-dependent effects of cryotherapy on the redox balance in lesioned quadriceps muscles in F1 mice. Twenty male F1 mice were divided into five groups: (a) animals were not subjected to muscle lesioning or treatment (CTR); (b) quadriceps muscle was lesioned without treatment (L); (c) quadriceps muscle was lesioned and treated with cryotherapy for 5 min (LC5); (d) quadriceps muscle was lesioned and treated with cryotherapy for 20 min (LC20); and quadriceps muscle was lesioned and treated with cryotherapy for 40 min (LC40).

Background: Treatment for horses with pythiosis of a limb is challenging. This study aims to evaluate the effects of administering amphotericin B in a 10 % solution of dimethylsulfoxide by intravenous regional limb perfusion (IRLP) to treat horses for cutaneous pythiosis of a limb.

Results: All 15 of the horses treated had complete resolutions of their lesion between 6 to 9 weeks after a single IRLP treatment.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of Community Health Agents (CHA) about the oral health/disease process, and compare the results between those who work in Family Health Teams (FHT), with and without Oral Health Teams (OHT). The participants in this study were 162 subjects, representing 66% of the total number of CHA in the municipality, and 81 of them are connected with Family Health Units (FHU) with OHT, and 81 CHS with FHUs without OHT. Data were collected from October to December 2013, by application of a questionnaire, containing personal and professional data, and 12 validated questions about knowledge of the oral health/disease process.

[Impact of the activation of intention to perform physical activity in type II diabetics: a randomized clinical trial].

Type II diabetes mellitus is a highly prevalent disease among the adult Brazilian population, and one that can be controlled by interventions such as physical activity, among others. The aim of this randomized controlled study was to evaluate the impact of a traditional motivational strategy, associated with the activation of intention theory, on adherence to physical activity in patients with type II, diabetes mellitus who are part of the Unified Health System (SUS). Participants were divided into a control group (CG) and an intervention group (IG).
