Impact of multisection and immunohistochemistry in lymph node staging of Gastric Carcinoma - Case series.

Gastric carcinoma (GC) locoregional recurrence may occur even in cases where the tumor has been completely resected, possibly due to lymph node (LN) micrometastases. It is estimated that in 10% to 30% of cases, LN micrometastases are not detected by a conventional method for histological assessment of LN metastases with hematoxylin-eosin (HE). A cross-sectional study assessed 51 patients with GC by histological evaluation of the LN micrometastases through LN multi sectioning associated with immunohistochemistry analysis with monoclonal antibodies AE1 and AE3.

Background: Chordomas and ecchordosis physaliphora may on rare occasions present with intracranial hemorrhage. Their distinction usually relies on the results of the Ki-67 proliferative index, with a result lower than 1% favoring ecchordosis physaliphora. Intracranial hemorrhagic chordomas have been linked to unfavorable prognosis, due to acute neurologic deterioration and death, or progression after treatment.

Nuclear inclusions and pseudoinclusions: friends or foes of the surgical pathologist?

Abnormal substances in the nuclei that can be observed by light microscopy are often broadly referred to as nuclear inclusions. Although their recognition in the appropriate clinicopathological settings can aid in the diagnosis of some disease entities and tumor types, they can also be a source of error. There are 2 morphologically distinct types of inclusions with different mechanisms of formation and diagnostic significance, including bona fide nuclear inclusions and nuclear pseudoinclusions.

Association between decreased WWOX protein expression and thyroid cancer development.

Context: Chromosomal fragile sites are often related to cancer development. The WW domain-containing oxidoreductase gene (WWOX) spans the second most common chromosomal fragile site (FRA16D) and encodes an important proapoptotic protein.

Objective: To verify our hypothesis that underexpression of WWOX could contribute to malignant transformation of the thyroid cells.
