Objective: To evaluate third- and sixth-year medical students in Brazil in terms of their knowledge of and attitudes toward the WHO MPOWER policies to reduce tobacco use.
Methods: The WHO Global Health Professions Student Survey was applied in five cohorts of medical students evaluated in their third and sixth years of medical school, between 2008 and 2015. Comparisons were drawn between the two years of medical school in terms of the proportions of students who experimented with or used tobacco products in the last 30 days prior to the survey; knowledge of and compliance with smoke-free policies on the university campus; formal training on smoking cessation strategies; and self-recognition as role models for patients/society.
Background: Silicosis is the most prevalent pneumoconiosis in Brazil. We aimed to estimate mortality rates and temporal trends for silicosis, and to identify areas of highest mortality.
Methods: Records of silicosis as the underlying (1980-2017) or contributory (2000-2017) cause of death in adults aged 20 years and older were retrieved from the Brazilian Mortality Database.
Background: Identification of biomarkers associated with the diagnosis and prognosis of silicosis would be highly advantageous in the clinical setting. The aim of this study is to evaluate inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers in subjects exposed to silica.
Methods: A cross-sectional study of crystal craftsmen currently (n = 34) or formerly (n = 35) exposed and a group of nonexposed subjects (n = 12) was performed.

Unlabelled: The firefighters are at increased risk of respiratory disease as a result of exposure to smoke and dust. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk associated with respiratory symptoms among city firefighters in São Paulo, Brazil.
Methods: A cross-sectional study utilizing the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) questionnaire was administered to firefighters and police officers, in order to evaluate their respiratory symptoms.

Methods: Data on registered commercial products in the years 1990 and 2000 were analyzed according to toxicological class, date of registration of the active ingredient (before or after the Law) and usage class (insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and others).
Background: Occupational asthma (OA) is the leading occupational respiratory disease in the area of São Paulo Municipality. Understanding its characteristics can provide useful information for better interventions.
Methods: From a joint registry of OA from five outpatient public clinics for occupational respiratory diseases, data on occupation, with job titles corrected by an expert evaluation, agents, exposure and symptom duration, and spirometry were analyzed by gender.
