Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the impact of rumen-protected methionine (RPM) supplementation on the body temperature and conception rates of Nelore cows in high heat and humidity conditions.
  • 562 lactating cows were divided into two groups: one received RPM supplements, while the other did not, for a duration of 77 days prior to artificial insemination.
  • Results showed that RPM supplementation helped lower internal body temperatures during peak heat hours, but it did not significantly affect the cows' conception rates.

Thermoelectric phenomena, such as the Anomalous Nernst and Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effects, are promising for sensor applications in the area of renewable energy. In the case of flexible electronic materials, the request is even larger because they can be integrated into devices having complex shape surfaces. Here, we reveal that Pt promotes an enhancement of the thermoelectric response in Co-rich ribbon/Pt heterostructures due to the spin-to-charge conversion.

This study explores the potential of integrating thin-film technology in the design of new and effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and conductive materials for textiles and wearables. This application is of particular interest to the textile industry as it can bring new functionalities to wearables and protect humans from prolonged exposure to EM radiation. Three different thin films of pure Ti, pure Cu, and Ti-doped with Cu prepared by magnetron sputtering were used to functionalize textile knits based on cotton (code 39F) and lyocell fibers (62I).

The intensification of ewe production, focusing on increasing prolificity, results in a higher incidence of metabolic disorders, especially in the transition period, which can lead to production losses with consequences for the health of the animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the metabolic profile in transition period Lacaune ewes according to the parity and litter size born and its influence on the transference of passive immunity. Nineteen Lacaune ewes, with initial mean body weight of 76.

Fe3Co67Cr3Si15B12 ribbons with a high degree of flexibility and excellent corrosion stability were produced by rapid quenching technique. Their structural, magnetic, and thermomagnetic (Anomalous Nernst Effect) properties were studied both in an as-quenched (NR) state and after stress annealing during 1 h at the temperature of 350 °C and a specific load of 230 MPa (AR). X-ray diffraction was used to verify the structural characteristics of our ribbons.

The present study reported a method for inducing incomplete root fracture in human extracted teeth for the purpose of evaluating the merits of different diagnostic imaging techniques. Thirty-five single-rooted teeth were inspected under magnification and transillumination to exclude previously fractured teeth. Tooth crowns were removed, and the root canals were prepared up to the ProTaper Next X4 (40.

Titanium-copper alloy films with stoichiometry given by Ti1-xCux were produced by magnetron co-sputtering technique and analyzed in order to explore the suitability of the films to be applied as resistive temperature sensors with antimicrobial properties. For that, the copper (Cu) amount in the films was varied by applying different DC currents to the source during the deposition in order to change the Cu concentration. As a result, the samples showed excellent thermoresistivity linearity and stability for temperatures in the range between room temperature to 110 °C.

The transition period in taurine dairy cows is widely reported in the literature. However, little is known about the metabolism of zebu animals and their crossbreeding with taurine breeds during this phase. Considering the importance of these breeds in tropical and subtropical regions, this study aimed to evaluate the feed intake, milk production and hepatic metabolism in Holstein, Gyr and Girolando-F1 (½ Holstein × ½ Gyr) heifers presenting high body condition score (BCS) during the transition period (prepartum weeks -2 and -1 and postpartum weeks +1 and + 3).

The plasticity of the central nervous system (CNS) allows the change of neuronal organization and function after environmental stimuli or adaptation after sensory deprivation. The so-called critical period (CP) for neuroplasticity is the time window when each sensory brain region is more sensitive to changes and adaptations. This time window is usually different for each primary sensory area: somatosensory (S1), visual (V1), and auditory (A1).

The eradication of microorganisms from high traffic surfaces to prevent either viral or bacterial infections represents an urgent need, mainly in the scope of the present pandemic scenario. In this context, this work explores the dual functionality of titanium-copper thin films as pressure elements with antimicrobial properties, aiming for the implementation of touch and sensing capabilities in high traffic surfaces. Copper was employed as the antibacterial agent within a titanium matrix.

ZnO and doped ZnO films with non-ferromagnetic metal have been widely used as biosensor elements. In these studies, the electrochemical measurements are explored, though the electrical impedance of the system. In this sense, the ferromagnetic properties of the material can be used for multifunctionalization of the sensor element using external magnetic fields during the measurements.

In this paper, we explore and modify the structural, mechanical, and decorative properties of films composed by TiN and Ti (N, C) with a wide range of N gas flow during the deposition in order to be used on orthodontic systems. The films were grown using reactive DC magnetron sputtering from a pure Ti target and customized with C pellets onto Si and stainless steel 316L substrates. The structural properties were studied using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, while the mechanical ones were obtained through hardness, elastic modulus, and friction coefficient.

Using autogenous grafts in mucogingival surgeries is related to postoperative morbidity and limited tissue availability, and thus xenogeneic matrices are increasingly used. This in vitro study evaluated the influence of xenogeneic collagen matrix thickness on cell adhesion, morphology, viability, proliferation, and matrix degradation. Matrices were divided into three groups: SLC: single layer of Lumina Coat, as commercially available (2-mm thickness); DLC: double layer of SLC (Lumina Coat); and MG: single layer of Mucograft, as commercially available (4-mm thickness).

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of substituting sweet potato flour for ground corn in rations fed to lactating dairy on milk yield and composition, blood metabolites, and feeding behavior. Twenty lactating Holstein cows from 30 to 60 days postpartum were randomly assigned to one of two groups (n = 10 each) and used in a cross-over design trial with two treatments: a standard concentrate with ground corn as an energy source or experimental concentrate with sweet potato flour (SPF) replacing all of the ground corn. Each of the 35-day periods consisted of 14 days for adaptation to diet and 21 days for data and sample collection.

Crossbreeding is used to increase production and disease resistance in adult animals, and there is no research to assess the performance of animals in the early stages. The aim of this study was to evaluate the zootechnical and health performance of Holstein x Gir calves (½ HG: ½ Dutch ½ Gir and ¾ HG: ¾ Dutch ¼ Gir), from birth to 80 days of age, and compare metabolic parameters between groups. In this sense, calves were monitored for zootechnical parameters; epidemiological indexes such as morbidity, mortality, recurrence of diarrhea, pneumonia, and other diseases; as well as serum concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, total proteins, cholesterol, triglycerides, albumin, urea, and paraoxonase1 (PON1).
