[History notes of Dr. Raul Marcial Rojas on the development of regional academic medical centers in Puerto Rico].

Since 1976, with the foundation of the first private school of medicine in Puerto Rico, it was realized that governmental help was of the essence in order to maintain its accreditation from the official federal accrediting agency, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. This special article summarizes the history of such endeavor, which progressively resulted in the invaluable cooperation, validated through administrative regulations and legislative proceedings, of the Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine and its other paramedical programs. At present law number 126 of 2006, signed by then the past governor authorized the creation of four regional academic medical centers, one in each of the four medical schools operating independently as non-profit corporations.

Extraskeletal chondromas.

1. Extraskeletal chondromas occur in three variants: (a) as multiple nodules of synovial chondromatosis within a joint, (b) as a solitary lesion in association with articulations, within or adjacent to them, and (c) as an isolated cartilagenous lesion in the soft tissues, mostly of the hands and feet. 2.

Bone tumors of mixed origin: osteo-liposarcoma and osteo-rhabdomyosarcoma.

1. A complete perusal of the literature revealed twenty cases of primary liposarcoma of bone acceptable as such to the authors. These were tabulated as to location and age.

Desmoplastic fibroma of bone: report of one case and review of the literature.

A case of a primary desmoplastic fibroma of bone has been presented with a complete review of the world's literature on the subject. Our case represents the one hundred and twenty seventh case (127th) reported. The usual aggressive local growth and the classical radiological and histological characteristics are very well depicted in the case.

Cholecystitis due to Schistosoma mansoni, fact or fancy.

A case of a 50-year-old female with schistosomiasis of the gallbladder is reported. The clinical and pathological findings are presented.
