Background: Functional constipation and enuresis frequently coexist. Constipation treatment often results in resolution or improvement of the enuresis. However, besides the classical presentation, patients can present with occult constipation (OC) diagnosed in complementary evaluation; in addition, semi-occult constipation (SOC) can be detected by means of a detailed questionnaire.

Methods: This prospective experimental study enrolled 268 women: 133 with PE and 135 healthy pregnant women. All patients were evaluated by OA Doppler sonography, bilaterally, to assess their pulsatility index (PI), resistance index (RI), peak systolic velocity (PVS), second peak systolic velocity (P2), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), and peak ratio (PR).
Objectives: To evaluate ophthalmic Doppler velocimetry patterns in pregnant women with pregestational diabetes mellitus with and without retinopathy in comparison to pregnant women without gestational intercurrences.
Methods: This cross-sectional observational study analyzed Doppler indices of the ophthalmic arteries, including the resistive index (RI), pulsatility index, peak systolic velocity, second peak systolic velocity, peak ratio, and end-diastolic velocity (EDV), in 3 groups of pregnant women: diabetic with retinopathy (n = 12); diabetic without retinopathy (n = 85); and nondiabetic controls (n = 122). The Kruskal-Wallis test was used for the statistical analysis with a probability of 95%.
Objevect: To evaluate the Nutritional Status (NS) and follow the Enteral Nutritional Therapy (ENT) of patients in neurosurgical intervention.
Method: Cohort study in emergency or elective surgery patients with exclusive ENT. Anthropometric measurements (Arm Circumference (AC and Triceps Skinfold (TSF)) were measured on the first, seventh and 14th day.
The objective of this study was to analyze the relationships of osmotic and mechanical stability of erythrocytes with anthropometric, biochemical, hematologic and hemodynamic variables in pregnant women with preeclampsia (PE). The studied population consisted of 20 normotensive patients and 16 patients with PE. Patients with PE presented worse gestational outcome, greater hematologic impairment, erythrocytes osmotically more stable in vitro, but in conditions of isotonicity with the in vivo medium, in addition to hyperflow in orbital territory, when compared to normotensive patients.

Background: The red propolis (RdProp) is a resin produced by Apis mellifera bees, which collect the reddish exudate on the surface of its botanic source, the species Dalbergia ecastophyllum, popularly known in Brazil as "rabo de bugio". Considered as the 13th type of Brazilian propolis, this resin has been gaining prominence due to its natural composition, rich in bioactive substances not found in other types of propolis.
Objective: This review aims to address the most important characteristics of RdProp, its botanical origin, the main constituents, its biological properties and the patents related to this natural product.
This work describes an approach for the selection and detection of specific DNA probes related to Toxoplasma gondii, a protozoan parasite responsible for toxoplasmosis. The detection system was developed on graphite carbon electrode modified with poly(3-hydroxybenzoic acid) sensitized with ToxG1 probe. The hybridization of the specific genomic DNA related to T.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcai has been used by the population due to its high nutritional value and its benefits to health, such as its antioxidant properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of acai frozen pulp on oxidative stress parameters in cerebral cortex, hippocampus and cerebellum of Wistar rats treated with carbon tetrachloride (CCl). Thirty male Wistar rats (90-day-old) were orally treated with water or acai frozen pulp for 14 days (7 μL/g).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOlanzapine (OLP), the most important atypical antipsychotic drug of the new generation, a high cost drug, has low aqueous solubility, affecting its dissolution and absorption. Its complexation with modified cyclodextrins (CDs) is designed to achieve novel vectorization systems with higher solubility, consequently higher bioavailability. From the CD selection, among β-CD, methyl-β-CD (MβCD) and hydroxypropyl-β-CD, it was obtained a phase solubility diagram suggesting a 1:1 (mol:mol) OLP-CD stoichiometry and complexation constants of 966.

Even with surgical correction, postoperative management is feared because of its complicated course. Our aim was to describe the incidence of postoperative complications and identify the 1 and 6-month mortality rate of our ascending aortic dissection surgical cohort.

Methods: Twenty children born at a tertiary-care hospital (São Paulo, Brazil), between April 2006 and April 2007, with birth weight below 1250 g or less than 32 weeks of gestation, were evaluated. The multiprofessional evaluation included assessment of development using the Bayley III scale, at the corrected age of 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months.
Purpose: to analyze the ophthalmic artery functioning in pregnant women with systemic lupus erythematosus (PL) without active renal disease as compared to non-pregnant women with lupus (NPL) without active renal disease, and to normal pregnant women (PN).
Methods: observational study that analyzed ophthalmic artery dopplervelocimetric variables of 20 PN, 10 PL and 17 NPL women. The variables analyzed were: pulsatility index (PI), final diastolic velocity (FDV) and velocity peak ratio (VPR).
Objective: To predict readmission in intensive care unit analyzing the first 24 hours data after intensive care unit admission.
Methods: The first intensive care unit admission of patients was analyzed from January to May 2009 in a mixed unit. Readmission to the unit was considered those during the same hospital stay or within 3 months after intensive care unit discharge.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the respective dies after polyether elastomeric procedure in the presence or absence of cervical contact of the acrylic resin shell with the cervical region, establishing a comparison to dies obtained with stock trays. This study consisted of three groups with 10 specimens each: 1) acrylic copings without cervical contact, (cn); 2) acrylic copings with cervical contact (cc); 3) perforated stock tray, (st). The accuracy of the resulting dies was verified with the aid of a master crown, precisely fit to the master steel die.

The purpose of this study is to describe operative features, length of stay, complications and short term outcomes after coronary artery bypass graft in such patients.
Methods: From February 2005 to October 2007, 269 patients underwent coronary artery bypass graft.
Background And Objectives: Nosocomial catheter related bloodstream infections (CR-BSI) increase morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Central venous catheters (CVC) coated with rifampin and minocycline (RM) decrease rates of colonization and CR-BSI. However, recent trials challenged the clinical impact of such catheters.

Pharmacovigilance is essential to detect and evaluate adverse drug events, thereby reducing risks and avoiding excessive public health costs. This study focused on the pharmacovigilance programs in the pharmaceutical industry in São Paulo State, Brazil.

Our aim was to compare the traditional two-compartment model (subjective global assessment and anthropometry and blood tests) of nutritional assessment with a multicompartmental model (body composition analysis) in patients with cirrhosis.
Methods: Seventy-nine patients and 17 control subjects were studied.
Context: During the first year of life, the growth process is highly vulnerable to several impairing factors that need to be understood.
Objective: To perform follow-up evaluation on newborns weighing less than or equal to 2,000 g in a population of low socioeconomic level.
Type Of Study: Retrospective.
