Introduction: Little literature exists on graduates' application to practice for explicit critical thinking skills learned in dental school.

Purposes: Discern the (1) degree to which graduates apply explicit critical thinking skillsets in practice; (2) degree of adaptation of critical thinking skillsets to practice; (3) frequency of use for critical thinking skillsets in practice; and (4) perceptions to improve critical thinking learning guidance in dental school.

Methods: Five critical thinking exercises/skillsets were selected that had been in place over 5 years with at least one paper: geriatrics, treatment planning, technology decision making, ethics, evidence-based dentistry; each followed concepts from an emulation model in critical thinking.

Drafting strategic plans for dental school departments traditionally involves a committee-led or leadership-driven process, often overlooking input from the majority of departmental members. In this manuscript, the authors advocate for a novel approach wherein departmental activities undergo comprehensive review and analysis, and the establishment of novel objectives through diverse forums of engagement with both faculty and staff, conducted collectively and individually over a concise time limit. This methodology endeavors to solicit input from all departmental constituents through varied channels, fostering an environment wherein all members feel empowered to express their viewpoints, resulting in a strategic plan that resonates with the entire department and enhances the likelihood of successful implementation.

As the world population ages, the need for age friendly care increases. In dentistry, age friendly care requires an appropriate comprehension of multiple factors that can be categorized in socio-economic circumstances, systemic health problems, and oral health conditions. In addition to the understanding of these factors and its relationships among each other, the future dental workforce should also be aware of unconscious and pervasive societal stereotypical perception of older persons, aging, and being old, which results in ageism and ageist attitudes.

When caring for the oral health of frail and functionally dependent older adults, it is important to understand their general health and oral health problems to make a diagnosis. There are multiple treatment strategies available to care for their needs; many may not be evidence based. Dental treatment planning for older adults is as much art as science and requires clinicians to understand how patients are functioning in their environments and how oral health care fits into their needs and lifestyle.
