  • Recent international guidelines have defined metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), leading to a rise in its prevalence as a reason for liver transplantation (LT) in Italy between 2012 and 2022.
  • * An analysis of 1,941 patients with MASLD and 11,201 without MASLD revealed that while the prevalence of MASLD patients waiting for LT increased significantly, it did not independently affect patient survival post-transplant.
  • * Patients with non-HCC MASLD faced higher mortality rates on the waiting list but projected better 5-year transplant survival benefits than those without MASLD or HCC.

The development of three-dimensional (3D) biomaterials that mimic natural tissues is required for efficiently restoring physiological functions of injured tissues and organs. In the field of soft hydrogels, self-assembled peptides (SAPs) stand out as distinctive biomimetic scaffolds, offering tunable properties. They have garnered significant attention in nanomedicine due to their innate ability to self-assemble, resulting in the creation of fibrous nanostructures that closely mimic the microenvironment of the extracellular matrix (ECM).

The recreational boating sector is a major vector for the introduction of non-indigenous species (NIS) via biofouling. Despite applying control measures to prevent the growth of fouling communities, most vessels are NIS carriers. This study assessed the effectiveness of different antifouling strategies in a manipulative experiment by testing two common coating typologies (biocide-based and foul-release coatings), accompanied with simulated maintenance practices.

Managing marine nonindigenous species (mNIS) is challenging, because marine environments are highly connected, allowing the dispersal of species across large spatial scales, including geopolitical borders. Cross-border inconsistencies in biosecurity management can promote the spread of mNIS across geopolitical borders, and incursions often go unnoticed or unreported. Collaborative surveillance programs can enhance the early detection of mNIS, when response may still be possible, and can foster capacity building around a common threat.
