Offline orbitofrontal cortex reactivation depends on recency of place-reward changes and coheres with hippocampal replay.

The orbitofrontal cortex, one of the key neocortical areas in valuation and emotion, is critical for cognitive flexibility but its role in the consolidation of recently acquired information remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate orbitofrontal offline replay in the context of a place-reward association task on a maze with varying goal locations. When switches in place-reward coupling were applied, replay was enhanced relative to sessions with stable contingencies.

Neural correlates of object identity and reward outcome in the sensory cortical-hippocampal hierarchy: coding of motivational information in perirhinal cortex.

Neural circuits support behavioral adaptations by integrating sensory and motor information with reward and error-driven learning signals, but it remains poorly understood how these signals are distributed across different levels of the corticohippocampal hierarchy. We trained rats on a multisensory object-recognition task and compared visual and tactile responses of simultaneously recorded neuronal ensembles in somatosensory cortex, secondary visual cortex, perirhinal cortex, and hippocampus. The sensory regions primarily represented unisensory information, whereas hippocampus was modulated by both vision and touch.

Triple dissociation of visual, auditory and motor processing in mouse primary visual cortex.

Primary sensory cortices respond to crossmodal stimuli-for example, auditory responses are found in primary visual cortex (V1). However, it remains unclear whether these responses reflect sensory inputs or behavioral modulation through sound-evoked body movement. We address this controversy by showing that sound-evoked activity in V1 of awake mice can be dissociated into auditory and behavioral components with distinct spatiotemporal profiles.

Magnetic resonance imaging-based prediction models for tumor stage and cervical lymph node metastasis of tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

Purpose: To evaluate the ability of preoperative MRI-based measurements to predict the pathological T (pT) stage and cervical lymph node metastasis (CLNM) via machine learning (ML)-driven models trained in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC).

Materials And Methods: 108 patients with a new diagnosis of OTSCC were enrolled. The preoperative MRI study included post-contrast high-resolution T1-weighted images acquired in all patients.

Cortical computations require coordination of neuronal activity within and across multiple areas. We characterized spiking relationships within and between areas by quantifying coupling of single neurons to population firing patterns. Single-neuron population coupling (SNPC) was investigated using ensemble recordings from hippocampal CA1 region and somatosensory, visual, and perirhinal cortices.

Coherent mapping of position and head direction across auditory and visual cortex.

Neurons in primary visual cortex (V1) may not only signal current visual input but also relevant contextual information such as reward expectancy and the subject's spatial position. Such contextual representations need not be restricted to V1 but could participate in a coherent mapping throughout sensory cortices. Here, we show that spiking activity coherently represents a location-specific mapping across auditory cortex (AC) and lateral, secondary visual cortex (V2L) of freely moving rats engaged in a sensory detection task on a figure-8 maze.

Functional (ir)Relevance of Posterior Parietal Cortex during Audiovisual Change Detection.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) plays a key role in integrating sensory inputs from different modalities to support adaptive behavior. Neuronal activity in PPC reflects perceptual decision-making across behavioral tasks, but the mechanistic involvement of PPC is unclear. In an audiovisual change detection task, we tested the hypothesis that PPC is required to arbitrate between the noisy inputs from the two different modalities and help decide in which modality a sensory change occurred.

Multisensory task demands temporally extend the causal requirement for visual cortex in perception.

Primary sensory areas constitute crucial nodes during perceptual decision making. However, it remains unclear to what extent they mainly constitute a feedforward processing step, or rather are continuously involved in a recurrent network together with higher-order areas. We found that the temporal window in which primary visual cortex is required for the detection of identical visual stimuli was extended when task demands were increased via an additional sensory modality that had to be monitored.

Background: The first goal of the study was to analyse the antibody titre 21 days after the first dose of the BNT162b2 vaccine in a group of 252 healthcare workers (HCW). The second goal was to analyse how the antibody titre changes in correlation with age, gender and body mass index (BMI).

Methods: Participants had a nasopharyngeal swab for SARS-CoV-2 and were assessed for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies at baseline and 21 days after the BNT162b2 priming dose.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck district are generally treated with surgery. Surgery is the standard treatment in early stages and local advanced tumors, followed by adjuvant therapy, radiation or concurrent chemoradiation therapy. Local recurrence treatment depends on previous therapies, though radical surgery is often the first choice at the expense of anatomy preservation.

Neural Correlates of Multisensory Detection Behavior: Comparison of Primary and Higher-Order Visual Cortex.

We act upon stimuli in our surrounding environment by gathering the multisensory information they convey and by integrating this information to decide on a behavioral action. We hypothesized that the anterolateral secondary visual cortex (area AL) of the mouse brain may serve as a hub for sensorimotor transformation of audiovisual information. We imaged neuronal activity in primary visual cortex (V1) and AL of the mouse during a detection task using visual, auditory, and audiovisual stimuli.

Multiplexing of Information about Self and Others in Hippocampal Ensembles.

In addition to coding a subject's location in space, the hippocampus has been suggested to code social information, including the spatial position of conspecifics. "Social place cells" have been reported for tasks in which an observer mimics the behavior of a demonstrator. We examine whether rat hippocampal neurons may encode the behavior of a minirobot, but without requiring the animal to mimic it.

Sustainable computational science: the ReScience initiative.

Computer science offers a large set of tools for prototyping, writing, running, testing, validating, sharing and reproducing results; however, computational science lags behind. In the best case, authors may provide their source code as a compressed archive and they may feel confident their research is reproducible. But this is not exactly true.

Vastus lateralis myofascial free flap in tongue reconstruction.

In the last decade, the antero-lateral thigh free flap (ALT) has become the most popular free flap for tongue reconstruction because of less donor site morbidity and better cosmetic outcomes. However, fascio-cutaneous ALT may be insufficient to reconstruct major tongue defects, while its muscular-cutaneous variant (using the vastus lateralis muscle) may be too bulky. The present study describes our preliminary experience of tongue reconstruction with vastus lateralis myofascial flap, which could potentially offer unique advantages in head and neck reconstruction including adequate bulk when needed, optimal functional results and obliteration of dead space thus preventing fistulas and infections with minimal morbidity.

Active middle ear implant after lateral petrosectomy and radiotherapy for ear cancer.

Background: Tumor of the temporal bone is a rare disease with a very poor prognosis. Surgery and postoperative radiotherapy are usually the recommended treatments for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the external and middle ear, which may cause conductive hearing loss. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the audiologic results and compliance of active middle ear implant (AMEI) and establish the feasibility of the procedure in a patient treated for middle ear cancer.

Predictive factors for postoperative wound complications after neck dissection.

The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate risk factors for wound complications after neck dissection. One hundred and nineteen patients were treated with neck dissection for squamous-cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract at the National Cancer Institute in Rome between 2006 and 2009. Postoperative wound complications were divided into major or minor and were related to different variables to identify risk factors.

Role of multidetector CT angiography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound in redefining follow-up protocols after endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

Purpose: Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) is an appealing alternative to computed tomography angiography (CTA) for the follow-up of patients who underwent endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR). We sought to evaluate the accuracy of CEUS compared with a particularly tailored protocol of CTA performed with a 64-row multidetector CT.

Materials And Methods: The study prospectively enrolled 88 consecutive patients for CEUS and CTA imaging during follow-up after EVAR, yielding 142 paired examinations.

Long-standing postsurgical lower cranial nerve palsy mimicking a pharyngolaryngeal submucosal mass in an elderly patient.

Changes that occur as a natural part of senescence in the complex action of deglutition predispose to dysphagia and aspiration. This dysfunction is worsened in patients with preexisting anatomic or functional alteration such as in case of a postsurgical lower cranial nerve palsy. We present the case of a 72-year-old woman who underwent surgical resection of a right jugulotympanic tumor 33 years ago, resulting in lower cranial nerve palsy, and came to our attention referring a 4 months' history of progressive dysphagia in which a pharyngolaryngeal submucosal mass was suspected.
