Rituals represent a prominent human behavior in different contexts such as daily routines, life cycle stages, and psychopathology, for example, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) where they are referred to as compulsions. OCD compulsions differ from habitual behaviors and stereotypies regarding their formal features: acts repetition, the addition of nonfunctional acts, and attentional focus on basic motor units. This study aims to categorize OCD compulsions based on the motor patterns of acts repetition and inclusion of nonfunctional acts.

Introduction: Individuals with schizophrenia present anomalies in the extension and plasticity of the peripersonal space (PPS), the section of space surrounding the body, shaped through motor experiences. A weak multisensory integration in PPS would contribute to an impairment of self-embodiment processing, a core feature of the disorder linked to specific subjective experiences. In this exploratory study, we aimed at: (1) testing an association between PPS features, psychopathology, and subjective experiences in schizophrenia; (2) describing the PPS profile in individuals with early-onset schizophrenia.

The lithium cycling in the supra-subduction mantle wedge is crucial for understanding the generation of Li-rich magmas that may potentially source ore deposition in continental arcs. Here, we look from the mantle source perspective at the geological processes controlling the Li mobility in convergent margins, by characterizing a set of sub-arc mantle xenoliths from the southern Andes (Coyhaique, western Patagonia). The mineral trace element signatures and oxygen fugacity estimates (FMQ >  + 3) in some of these peridotite xenoliths record the interaction with arc magmas enriched in fluid-mobile elements originally scavenged by slab dehydration.

Background: Although obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is highly prevalent in schizophrenia, its relationship with patients' real-life functioning is still controversial.

Methods: The present study aims at investigating the prevalence of OCD in a large cohort of non-preselected schizophrenia patients living in the community and verifying the relationship of OCD, as well as of other psychopathological symptoms, with real-life functioning along a continuum of OCD severity and after controlling for demographic variables.

Results: A sample of 327 outpatients with schizophrenia was enrolled in the study and collapsed into three subgroups according to OCD severity (subclinical, mild-moderate, severe).

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the relationship between psychotic-like anomalous self-experiences (ASEs) and eating disorders, focusing on Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.
  • Patients with these disorders show high levels of ASEs similar to those found in schizophrenia spectrum disorders, indicating a possible link between the two.
  • The research suggests that ASEs affect eating disorder symptoms through their impact on identity and body image, highlighting the importance of assessing ASEs for understanding vulnerabilities in these conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • People with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are at heightened risk for developing psychotic disorders, but specific signs indicating this risk are not well understood.
  • A study involving 100 outpatients explored the connection between childhood trauma and psychotic vulnerability in individuals with OCD, revealing that greater trauma experiences are linked to more severe OCD symptoms and earlier onset of the disorder.
  • The findings indicate that emotional neglect during childhood may be a significant factor in predicting psychotic vulnerability, especially in younger patients with OCD, highlighting the need for further research on the links between trauma, OCD, and psychosis.

The perception of social exclusion among patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) could be affected by long-term opioid use. This study explores the emotional and cardiac autonomic responses to an experience of ostracism in a sample of participants with OUD on opioid agonist treatment (OAT). Twenty patients with OUD and twenty healthy controls (HC) performed a ball-tossing game (Cyberball) with two conditions: Inclusion and Ostracism.

Objective: Ethological models have highlighted a specific motor structure of compulsions in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), based on the rigid repetitions of acts, and with the adaptive significance of facing unpredictable conditions. Such an evolutionary mechanism might explain the robust association between childhood traumatic experiences (CTEs) and OCD. However, a relationship between CTEs and the motor structure of compulsions has not been investigated yet.

Aim: In schizophrenia, subjectively perceived disruptions of the sense of the Self (also referred to as "self-disorders") seem to be intimately associated with a perturbation of the implicit awareness of one's own body. Indeed, an early impairment of the motor system, including posture and gait, is now considered a marker of schizophrenia neurodevelopmental substrate and appears more pronounced in early-onset schizophrenia. Therefore, the present study was aimed at: (1) investigating a possible relationship between self-disorders, symptom dimensions and postural and gait profile in schizophrenia; (2) identifying a specific motor profile in early-onset conditions.
