Temporary bilateral clamping of renal arteries induces ischemia-reperfusion: A new pig model of acute kidney injury using total intravenous anesthesia.

Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) is a leading cause of acute kidney injury (AKI), and pigs are commonly used in preclinical AKI models. However, existing models often vary in the methods used to induce ischemia, and the resulting AKI tends to be mild-to-moderate. Moreover, follow-up is often performed under volatile anesthesia, which, in contrast to total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA), can induce malignant hyperthermia and cause hemodynamic instability.

Early palliative care in metastatic uveal melanoma (early together): protocol of a prospective randomized Phase III trial.

Metastatic uveal melanoma (UM) patients often initially present with limited symptoms despite a poor prognosis, complicating communication with patients and caregivers. Early Together (NCT04728113) is a randomized Phase III trial that integrates early palliative care through systematic joint visits involving the palliative care team and the medical oncologist, compared with standard oncological care, in 162 metastatic UM patients beginning systemic treatment. This collaboration aims to enhance patient functioning, improve quality of life and facilitate coping mechanisms.

Innovation in computer modeling and simulation approaches has changed the landscape in biomedical applications and biomedicine, paving the way for their potential contribution in reducing, refining, and partially replacing animal and human clinical trials.

Automatic deep learning method for third lumbar selection and body composition evaluation on CT scans of cancer patients.

Introduction: The importance of body composition and sarcopenia is well-recognized in cancer patient outcomes and treatment tolerance, yet routine evaluations are rare due to their time-intensive nature. While CT scans provide accurate measurements, they depend on manual processes. We developed and validated a deep learning algorithm to automatically select and segment abdominal muscles [SM], visceral fat [VAT], and subcutaneous fat [SAT] on CT scans.

Development of an oral nanovaccine for dogs against Echinococcus granulosus.

Dogs are the main source of animal and human cystic echinococcosis caused by the Cestode parasite Echinococcus granulosus. Dog vaccination seems to be a good strategy to control this parasitic disease. Here we present the development of a polymeric nanoparticle-based oral vaccine for dogs against Echinococcus granulosus delivered in enteric-coated capsules.

Nutrition support in pancreatic cancer: An expert statement on practical implementation of French guidelines.

The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) guidelines, shortened in 2021, are widely used for providing the most suitable nutrition support to patients with cancer. However, there is a lack of specialized guidelines for different cancer types. In 2020, members of the French medical and surgical societies involved in digestive oncology, nutrition and supportive care developed the Thésaurus National de Cancérologie Digestive (TNCD) practice guidelines which are specific nutritional and physical activity guidelines for patients with digestive cancers.

Implementation of palliative care day hospital for outpatients with advanced cancer.

Objectives: To describe the population of a palliative care day hospital (PCDH) in oncology and analyse the end-of-life trajectory.

Methods: Monocentric retrospective cohort study of all referred patients for the first time to PCDH over an 8-month period with the data collected in all PCDH in their pathway care.

Results: 116 patients were included for 319 stays in PCDH.

Netrin-1 is a member of the laminin superfamily, and is known to interact with specific receptors, called dependence receptors. While upon netrin-1 binding these receptors initiate positive signaling, in absence of netrin-1, these receptors trigger apoptosis. Tumor cells can avoid apoptosis by inactivating these receptors or by gaining ligand expression.

Toward A Regulatory Pathway for the Use of in Silico Trials in the CE Marking of Medical Devices.

In Silico Trials methodologies will play a growing and fundamental role in the development and de-risking of new medical devices in the future. While the regulatory pathway for Digital Patient and Personal Health Forecasting solutions is clear, it is more complex for In Silico Trials solutions, and therefore deserves a deeper analysis. In this position paper, we investigate the current state of the art towards the regulatory system for in silico trials applied to medical devices while exploring the European regulatory system toward this topic.

Association between Nutritional Status and Treatment Response and Survival in Patients Treated with Immunotherapy for Lung Cancer: A Retrospective French Study.

Malnutrition is associated with a greater risk of morbidity and mortality and lower tolerance to chemotherapy. Our purpose was to study the association between nutritional status and the efficiency and tolerance of immunotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Nutritional and oncological data were reported at 2 months (M2) and 4 months (M4) after the initiation of immunotherapy (M0).

Anatomical features of the canine C2-C3 spinal cord vascular environment.

Objective: Interarcuate branch (IAB) is a vascular structure, particularly developed in C2-3 intervertebral space, forming a dorsal bridge that connects ventral venous plexi in the vertebral canal. While precisely described in the human, the precise anatomical features of IABs have not been reported in the veterinary literature. The purpose of this study is to describe the features and relations of IABs in the C2-3 vertebral canal.

CT-Guided Percutaneous Vertebroplasty of the Cervico-Thoracic Junction for the Management of Pathologic Fracture or Symptomatic Lytic Lesion in Cancer Patients.

Objectives: The purpose of this retrospective observational study is to report author's experience in computed-tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) of the cervicothoracic junction.

Methods: The records of all consecutive patients treated by PV at levels C7, T1, T2, and T3 in a tertiary cancer center during year 2020 were extracted from the Institutional electronic archive. Following data were collected: demographics, indication for PV, procedure features, outcomes, and complications.

Association between Body Mass Index and Survival Outcome in Metastatic Cancer Patients Treated by Immunotherapy: Analysis of a French Retrospective Cohort.

The response to immunotherapy has been little investigated in overweight and obese cancer patients. We evaluated the relationships between BMI, toxicity, and survival in patients treated by immunotherapy for metastatic cancer. We included metastatic cancer patients treated by immunotherapy between January 2017 and June 2020 at the Centre Léon Bérard.

Advanced cancer and COVID-19 comorbidity: medical oncology-palliative medicine ethics meetings in a comprehensive cancer centre.

Objectives: In managing patients with cancer in the COVID-19 era, clinical oncologists and palliative care practitioners had to face new, disrupting and complex medical situations, challenging the quality of the shared decision-making process. During the first lockdown in France, we developed an onco-palliative ethics meeting to enhance the quality of the decision-making process for patients with advanced cancer treated for COVID-19.

Methods: A least one of the institutional ethics committee members was present along with oncologists, palliative care teams, psycho-oncologists, radiologists and intensive care specialists.

Palliative care in day-hospital for advanced cancer patients: a study protocol for a multicentre randomized controlled trial.

Background: Team-based and timely integrated palliative care is a gold standard of care in oncology, but issues concerning its optimal organization remain. Palliative Care in Day-Hospital (PCDH) could be one of the most efficient service model of palliative care to deliver interdisciplinary and multidimensional care addressing the complex supportive care needs of patients with advanced cancer. We hypothesize that, compared to conventional outpatient palliative care, PCDH allows the clinical benefits of palliative care to be enhanced.

Canine cutaneous histiocytoma (CCH) is a noninfectious tumor that spontaneously regresses. It is suggested that this regression is due to tumor cell maturation, which is responsible for CD8 lymphocyte activation and tumor cell destruction. Nevertheless, the possible role of the immune microenvironment in tumor regression has not been investigated to date.

Interplay between enterohaemorrhagic and nitric oxide during the infectious process.

Enterohaemorrhagic (EHEC) are bacterial pathogens responsible for life-threatening diseases in humans such as bloody diarrhoea and the hemolytic and uremic syndrome. To date, no specific therapy is available and treatments remain essentially symptomatic. In recent years, we demonstrated that nitric oxide (NO), a major mediator of the intestinal immune response, strongly represses the synthesis of the two cardinal virulence factors in EHEC, namely Shiga toxins (Stx) and the type III secretion system, suggesting NO has a great potential to protect against EHEC infection.
