Streptococcus pneumoniae and influenza A virus (IAV) are significant agents of pneumonia cases and severe respiratory infections globally. Secondary bacterial infections, particularly by Streptococcus pneumoniae, are common in IAV-infected individuals, leading to critical outcomes. Despite reducing mortality, pneumococcal vaccines have high production costs and are serotype specific.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of a long-acting recombinant human FSH (rhFSH, corifollitropin-alpha) to induce ovarian stimulation in Nelore breed (Bos indicus) calves and prepubertal heifers prior to ovum pick-up (OPU) for in vitro embryo production (IVEP). In Experiment 1, a dose-response trial was performed to determine the optimal dose of rhFSH, which was determined to be 10 μg. In Experiment 2, 6-7 mo old calves were randomly allocated to receive rhFSH either via sc (n = 5) or im (n = 5).

This study aimed to determine the effects of MB combined with epinephrine during cardiac arrest on myocardial and cerebral lesions.
Method: Thirty-eight male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups: the sham group (SH, n = 5), and three groups subjected to cardiac arrest (n = 11/group) and treated with EPI 20 µg.
Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate potential effects of diflubenzuron on the production and quality of gametes, and on embryo production (IVEP) outcomes, in cattle.
Methods: Two experiments were performed, the first to evaluate effects on semen, and the second on -oocyte complexes (COC) and on IVEP. Nelore () bulls ( = 14) or heifers ( = 16) were allocated into control (CG) or treatment (DIF) groups.
Background: Late-relapsing hepatitis after yellow fever (LHep-YF) during the convalescent phase of the disease has been described during recent yellow fever (YF) outbreaks in Brazil. LHep-YF is marked by a rebound in liver enzymes and nonspecific clinical manifestations around 46-60 days after YF symptom onset.
Methods: Here we have characterized the clinical course and risk factors for LHep-YF using data from a representative cohort of patients who survived YF in Brazil, 2017-2018.

Background: Occult hepatitis B virus infection (OBI) is defined as the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in the liver of individuals with undetectable hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) in the serum. The actual prevalence of OBI and its clinical relevance are not yet fully understood.
Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of HBV DNA in liver biopsies of HBsAg-negative patients with chronic liver disease of different etiologies in a referral center in Brazil and compare two different HBV DNA amplification protocols to detect HBV.
A main challenge in the clinical management of prostate cancer is to identify which tumor is aggressive and needs invasive treatment. Thus, being able to predict which cancer will progress to biochemical recurrence is a great strategy to stratify prostate cancer patients. With that in mind, we created a mathematical formula that takes into account the patients clinical and pathological data resulting in a quantitative variable, called PSA density of the lesion, which has the potential to predict biochemical recurrence.

However, evidence of asymptomatic ZIKV infection in pregnant women is still scarce. This study investigated the prevalence of Zika infection in asymptomatic pregnant women attending two public maternities in Maranhão state, Northeast Brazil.

We evaluated the tissue expression of the MAPK and PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway proteins and their association with long-term outcome and other parameters, according to the etiology of the CLD, in HCC patients.
Methods: Clinicopathological data from 80 patients who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation for HCC treatment in a Brazilian referral center were compared according to CLD etiology.
During the yellow fever (YF) outbreak in Brazil, many cases of fulminant hepatitis were seen, although mild to moderate hepatitis was mostly observed with complete recovery. This report presents a case of late-onset hepatitis due to YF relapse. The patient sought medical attention after jaundice recurrence 40 days after the first YF hepatitis episode.

The development of a single reliable method may potentially contribute to distinguish true and false positive results. Our aim was to evaluate the performance of the multiplexed flow-cytometry anti-T.

Distinct Trypanosoma cruzi genotypes have been considered relevant for patient management and therapeutic response of Chagas disease. However, typing strategies for genotype-specific serodiagnosis of Chagas disease are still unavailable and requires standardization for practical application. In this study, an innovative TcI/TcVI/TcII Chagas Flow ATE-IgG2a technique was developed with applicability for universal and genotype-specific diagnosis of T.

Methods: Seventy women who underwent surgical treatment of endometrial adenocarcinoma with histologic confirmation of endometrioid type were included in the study. Two experienced pathologists randomly analyzed the slides in 3 distinct timeframes with a maximum of 25 slides/timeframe.

Background: The incidence of anal cancer has increased over the past 25 years, and HIV/HPV coinfection is the most important risk factor for anal squamous cell carcinoma. In this study, we demonstrated that the evaluation of systemic and compartmentalized anal mucosa immune response is relevant to differentiating HIV(+) patients at risk of anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN).
Methods: A systems biology approach was used to integrate different immunological parameters from anal mucosal tissue and peripheral blood assessed by phenotypic and intracytoplasmic analysis of lymphocytes and dendritic cell subsets.
Objective: This study focused on comparing the expression levels of p16, Ki-67, and minichromosome maintenance 7 (MCM7) protein in normal and affected cervical epithelium to ascertain the biological significance of these markers in detecting progressive cervical disease.
Methods: A quantitative and based on-scanning-microscopy analysis of the three markers expression was performed in normal and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I, II, and III tissues. p16 area as well as p16, Ki-67, and MCM7 positive cells or nuclei were evaluated according to their distribution and extent through the cervical epithelium.
Purpose: To study the influence of glutamine on functional and morphological changes of liver in the extrahepatic biliary obstruction through an experimental model in rats.
Methods: Seventy Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control (group C) fictitious operation, (group FO), submitted to laparotomy with handling of bile ducts, but without hepatic duct ligation, (group EBO) submitted to laparotomy and hepatic duct ligation, one of them submitted to supplementation with glutamine 2% (group G). The control group consisted of 6 animals.

Evaluation of the contamination of stethoscopes used in pediatric units of a hospital and emergency service showed that 87% of them presented contaminated diaphragms. Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus was the microorganism most frequently isolated. The resistance to antibiotics indicates that stethoscopes should be considered to be an important vehicle for disseminating bacteria resistant to antibiotics.

We report a case of a 50-year-old Brazilian man who presented with progressive hoarseness and throat pain for 4 months. Laryngoscopy showed a supraglottic vegetant lesion, and the biopsies chronic granulomatous inflammation without any specific agent.

This paper presents a Multicycles Protocol for Hospital Automation (MP-HA) that works over multicast addressing and uses a Master-Slave architecture. The protocol creates a segmented logical network based on multicast addressing associated to hospital beds. The objective of MP-HA is to ensure the determinism on network through medium access control mechanism increasing the transmission throughput.
