Free fatty acids (FFAs) have been shown to produce alteration of heart rate variability (HRV) in healthy and diabetic individuals. Changes in HRV have been described in septic patients and in those with hyperglycemia and elevated plasma FFA levels. We studied if sepsis-induced heart damage and HRV alteration are associated with plasma FFA levels in patients.

Objective: Sepsis is associated with increased production of superoxide and nitric oxide, with consequent peroxynitrite generation. Cardiodepression is induced in the heart during oxidative stress associated with septic shock. Oxidative and nitrosative stress can lead to activation of the nuclear enzyme poly(adenosine 5'-diphosphate [ADP]-ribose) polymerase (PARP), with subsequent loss of myocardial contractile function.
